((Ensign Kel’s Quarters - Compartment 11, Sector 3, Deck 5, USS Artemis-A))

The Medical Department on any given Starship had relatively clear guidelines for what duties befell which Doctors. Counselors were Counselors, Doctors were Doctors and if any specialists were onboard, they were generally contacted if any high-risk patients that fell within their competencies required help. While every Doctor was educated to handle most cases, there were clear differences in how a Doctor with a specialty in Pediatrics handled child patients as compared to a Doctor with a specialty in Surgery. It wasn’t a matter of abilities or competence, but of personality and drive. The aspects of the medical job that couldn’t be quantified and measured on a piece of paper, but could make a world of difference to the patient receiving care.

This soon after Frontier Day, however, it wasn’t a matter how ‘competent’ a given Doctor was for a task. It was a matter of ‘are your hands free? Do the job.’

That’s why Gila found herself shuffling in front of the door leading to Ensign Kel’s quarters. Ensign Kel had - according to the mission reports Gila had had the time to read - been part of the assimilated crew during Frontier Day, and had been involved in combat scenarios against most of the senior staff. Whether he’d been responsible for the deaths of other crewmen - whether he felt personally liable for any of the numerous numbers on the list known as the ‘Artemis-A Casualty Report’ - Gila couldn’t say.

Ideally, it should have been a counselor coming to see him. Ideally, it should’ve been someone more in tune with what it meant to have your body hijacked and piloted against your will, leaving you a passive bystander in your own body, unable to affect your actions. But the decision was made, and here she was. Gila only hoped the fact that she hadn’t been onboard the Artemis - the fact that she was, in effect, an outsider to what was likely the worst moment in the Ensign’s life - could assist with the task ahead of her.

She accessed the display on the door, announcing her presence, and awaited permission.

Kel: Response

It had come faster than she’d anticipated, and Gila didn’t feel like she had anywhere near enough time to prepare as the door allowed her entrance, even though she’d been standing outside it for close to six minutes, attempting to steel herself.

Sadar: E-Ensign Kel. I, uhh... I’m here to check in with you. W-We’re approaching the designated interval for your first counseling appointment, and since the counselor will be a stranger, we’re attempting to, uhh... ‘Bridge’ the divide?

Kel: Response

Sadar: I’m not sure yet... Some of the larger Ships are being kind enough to dispatch personnel to reinforce our counseling department so we can render appropriate aid to all our crew, but the logistical side of things haven’t been finalized yet… If it would help to know their name, I’ll attempt to get the information to you prior to your appointment.

Kel: Response

TAG/TBC

((OOC: I know that Gnai is planning on introducing a new Counselor PNPC who was transferred to the Artemis specifically for the above reason, so laying down the groundwork for some more scenes for you ;) Respond at your leisure :D ))
