K’Wara: So instead of Chief Vailani, the picture of professionalism and duty herself, you get me? Sounds like you got swindled somethin’ fierce there. Is that why we’re heading to Ferenginar? To chase down the charlatan responsible?

Jovenan: You could say so. But you shouldn’t.

Tamio’s objections were superficial at best. They’d held the position of Chief of Operations once before - on the Arthur Royale - and while it had been an overall positive experience, there was the rather obvious elephant in the room, which was the fact that they’d brought an end to that position quite finally with their voluntary reassignment to the Academy.

Chief Vailani’s presence on the Artemis-A had seemed a pretty good guarantee that Tamio would get more than three months of acclimatization to active duty before being shoved back in the office, but alas... Starfleet life.

Munro: :: mischievously :: Are you calling Fleet Captain MacKenzie a charlatan, Tamio?

K’Wara: Oh no, I’d never call her that. I value my mortal life too much for that. ::smiles and turns serious:: But thank you, really. I won't let any of you down.

It was a rare moment of gravitas from the usually flippant Cygnian, but the honest tone to their voice was hard to miss. They wouldn’t squander the opportunity, even if it had been unanticipated.

Which pretty much summed up their experience with the Artemis in general at this stage.

Munro: We know you won’t.

K’Wara: Now now, Ava, if you have lofty expectations, I have nothing to surpass with dramatic flair. ::mock melancholy:: And here I thought I’d played the layabout well enough to fool you...

Ava indicated that they and Jovenan should follow her to the bar, and they did so readily, looking to the smaller - a novelty - humanoid female walking next to them as she posed them a question.

Jovenan: Have you yet had the opportunity to meet all of your colleagues in the Operations, and the other department heads?

K’Wara: I’ve met the majority of the Ops department, though I wouldn’t call us fast friends yet. As for department heads... ::counts on fingers:: I think I’m just missing our elusive Chief of Tactical for our fellow chief staff.

An expression passed over the Science Chief’s expression at the mention of that person, though Ava chose that moment to order a beverage, distracting Tamio from their analysis.

Munro: Whisky neat.

K’Wara: Whisky on the rocks for me, please. ::jesting tone at Ava:: Ah, alas, this is how our friendship dies.

The bartender set to making their orders, as the ever inquisitive Jovenan turned her attention towards their Acting Captain, if only for another few days.

Jovenan: And you, Commander? Was the mission enough for you to familiarise yourself with the crew?

The pause before the answer that followed was heavy, and Tamio smiled as they realized Ava was cautious of being overheard.

Munro: Enough to know that I can rely on them. They’ve really proven themselves to be a fine crew. Anything us newbies should know, Jovenan?

K’Wara: I’d like to know where the undisclosed gambling ring is that seems to crop up on every Ship and every Ensign thinks the senior staff doesn’t know about.

Jovenan: Response

The bartender returned with the ordered drinks, and both Tamio and Ava readily picked up their determined whiskeys, with Tamio ensuring to swirl around the perfectly square icecubes in the amber liquid, the bell-like sound of frozen moisture against clear glass spreading in the air.

Munro: :: playful :: No scandalous gossip?

Jovenan: Response

K’Wara: That does sound unique, at least.

A Bolian crewman approached the three of them at that moment, carrying a dog in his arms. Ava’s body language told Tamio that the creature was her family, and likely the Bolian had just been minding it while Ava was off-Ship.

Munro: I have someone important for you both to meet.

The small dog’s tail flapped excitedly as the Bolian handed her off to Ava.

Munro: Thanks, Daron. I hope you found it educational?

Yeoman Daron: I’ve never met a doog before. Thank you for letting me borrow Suzie for my study :: to Tamio and Jovenan :: I’m conducting research on the therapeutic benefits of domestic animals on starships. Thanks again, Commander.

Tamio smiled.

K’Wara: A well-documented field of study in human history, but less so in the sterile era of space travel. ::winks:: Good luck with that.

Jovenan: Response

Daron left the three of them behind as Ava held out the small canine - Suzie? - who seemed so positively elated at being included in the festivities, Tamio figured her metabolic rate had to be going off the charts. They reached out to scratch the terrier’s ear almost instinctively, wistful.

K’Wara: My mother never forgave my dad for refusing his allergy shots. ::whispers:: Between you and me, Suzie, I think he just didn’t want the extra cleaning load.

Jovenan/Munro: Response

Tamio took a sip of their chilled whisky as they considered that.

K’Wara: Well, as far as first impressions go, the Artemis and her crew seem a lot more... Well, more than I’d anticipated. There seems to be an unprecedented concentration of workaholics gathered on a single Ship.

Jovenan/Munro: Response

K’Wara: Oh, I bet. I just hope they don’t let loose too much - Ferenginar isn’t exactly a vacation spot for the weak of heart, or pursestrings.

Jovenan/Munro: Response
