((Holodeck 2, Deck 2, Artemis-A))

It seemed like no matter how hard Breys tried to make Starfleet about plants, learning to use a phaser was inevitable.

Breys: I’m sorry sir, I’m having trouble holding it straight. It just makes me nervous to fire a phaser. It's a lot of power in a little container.

Storm: Fortunately, on stun, you can’t really hurt anyone.  Besides, right now, the only thing you’re fighting… is yourself.

The end of that sentence may have been spoken in another language to Breys.

Breys: What do you mean by that, sir?

Storm: Lower the phaser a second.

Storm stepped just a hair closer.

Storm: And reset.

Yet again Breys found herself straining her mind to remember the exact form of each limb. Her entire body exerted in the effort.

Storm:  Make sure that when you shoot, your arms don’t stiffen up.  They should stay bent.  That might be one reason why you’re having a hard time holding it straight.

Breys:  I think my everything stiffens up when I shoot. I’ll try my best.

Storm:  When you took your qualifications at the Academy, did they talk to you about sighting with your dominant eye?

Breys: Yes sir, I should be right eye dominant if I remember correctly.

She made a triangle with her fingers and moved it towards her nose. It came to rest on her right eye.

Storm: Response

Breys: I think I understand, is this any better?

The Ensign attempted to follow instructions, and struggled to get her eyes to focus in the new configuration.

Storm: Response

Breys took a deep breath, and sent another three bolts of phaser fire down range. Each one landed with substantially less hesitation than before. They formed a small triangle on the top corner of the target, the hit confirmation ringing out each time.

Breys: Yes! That’s better, right?

Storm: Response

Breys: At the academy we did pretty standard drills for the exam, why? Is it different on the Artemis?

Storm: Response

Computer: Beginning Storm, Phaser Qual 2 - Phase 2

As D’tin blinked in the sight of a ruined city around her, there was the sound of hounds in the distance.

Storm: Response

Breys started running.

End of scene for D’tin Breys
