((Science Centre, Deck 9, USS Artemis))
It had been a year since Frontier Day. Jovenan looked around at the faces of her direct subordinates at the Artemis Science Centre office space, her fellow scientists. She wondered how many of them still carried the scars of that day. The Science Department had been the section of the ship that took the smallest hit by the attack, thanks to the myriad of factors, from higher average age to risk-averse behaviour. Still, there had been many desks remaining unoccupied during the months following the event, many projects unfinished, many lab reports unfiled… many lives disrupted. Not all of it was due to death and destruction, directly: some people had opted to seek opportunities on other ships that had lost more of their science staff, or to leave Starfleet once they had realised that the ghosts would persist to haunt them unless they got out.
The Department’s most recent transfer was also influenced by the events of the previous Frontier Day, albeit indirectly. Jovenan had met Sam Richards for the first time on the Borg Cube in the Badlands, but due to the following chaos, she had almost entirely forgotten the woman who had, in the moment of panic no doubt, punched a Borg drone. It was only when the said woman had come back to the Artemis for a thank-you tour, she recognized her. During that conversation, Richards had revealed that she had started a relationship of some sort with Talos following them meeting in the storms of the Frontier Day, and, from what Jovenan had heard, that relationship had in part been why Jovenan was getting herself a new planetary scientist.
So, when the red-headed scientist first reported for duty (did civilians call their jobs “duty”? It had been a while Jovenan had been one) at the Science Centre, Jovenan was there to receive her with a smile on her face. The last time they had met, they had agreed to talk more about their research the next time, and that was what Jovenan intended to discuss. No more talk about the Frontier Day or the Borg, no more gossiping about the boys. It was science time.
Jovenan: Welcome to the Artemis! ::pause:: Again, I should say.
Richards: Response
Jovenan gestured around the Science Centre, as to show it off. Sure, it was a lot smaller than what she supposed Richards’ old posting at Amity Outpost had been, but she didn’t believe a person such as Richards would make a choice to transfer there if she hadn’t also familiarized herself with the actual work conditions on her new home. Jovenan was in matter of fact curious about what had caused Richards to decide that in the end – having begun a relationship of her own recently, Jovenan had thought about how easily she would make the same choice if Vitor transferred or left Starfleet, or vice versa – but it wasn’t the topic of their work meeting. It could wait.
Jovenan: I hope you’ve already received a thorough introduction to the ship and had at least some time to relax on Risa, because if it’s okay, I’d like to get straight to work. ::points around:: This is the Science Centre, where most of our research facilities are, including the Astrometrics and the Geology Lab. My office is also here, let’s pop in there for a moment to chat so we don’t bother the people working here.
Richards: Response
Leading Richards to her office, Jovenan sat behind her desk and placed a PADD on it. She had been reading Richards’ files, but now that the real person was there, she was eager to hear it all from her personally.
Jovenan: I’ve got some of your old work here, but I’d like to hear more. What kind of research projects have you been engaged in recently?
Richards: Response
