((Primary Sickbay - Deck 7, USS Artemis-A))

There surely were few things as relaxing as a calm and easy day in Sickbay. There were moments, of course, of bustle through the day - usually succeeding a holodeck drill run by a particularly surly boatswain or a shuttle flight trial that got a tad too close to the Badlands or an overeager bar night at Quark’s - but all-in-all, that particular day had been abnormally calm. As such, Gila had had plenty of time to read up on an upcoming conference on Alpha Centauri, set to bring together experts in medical science from all over the quadrants,

It was an intriguing prospect, to be sure, and the Captain had - once upon a time - ordered her out of Sickbay… This would qualify, surely? According to a communique from Vai-net, the Ronin’s latest shoreleave had brought them to Ferenginar, so it was plausible that she could take a small detour on the return trip, allowing her to catch up with her as well…

But, to no one’s surprise - least of all her own - the concept of applying for leave of all things filled her with dread. Granted, it was a leave for the distinct purpose of furthering her knowledge in the field of medical science - a boon for her crewful of patients, surely - but it was still leave. Time away from the Ship… Which, oddly enough, in spite of the innumerable chaotic, hazardous and downright insane events that had interfered with her life, and most grievously, research in the time since she first boarded the Artemis, she found the concept of time away to be even more concerning…

What would happen if the Artemis was taken over by boarders again, and she returned to an empty docking bay? Or if CloQ had decided that Lieutenant Silveira’s goading actually did hit a nerve, and the entire crew was displaced to the height of the Eugenics Wars? What if Command decided to be extra suicidal one day and scheduled a ship-wide drill in the heart of the Badlands!? The nightmare-inducing scenarios were innumerable, and did nothing for Gila’s already problematic attachment issues to her post…

oO Today’s a quiet day, why am I getting myself worked up like this? Oo

She was so wrapped up in her self-indulgent fit of borderline hysteria, that the tall Doctor barely noticed as one of the more vibrant people aboard the Artemis entered Sickbay and approached her,

Yellir: Oh, Ensign Sadar, it's good to see you!

Habits kicked in as Gila immediately stood at attention in the presence of her senior officer.

Sadar: Yes! ::pause as realization sets in:: Wait, huh?

Ensign? Ensign!?

To a non-Mizarian, the concept of misranking someone was probably low on the scale of ‘practically social suicide’, but Gila - as contested as it was - was considered a Mizarian by the vast majority of the galaxy, and if a Betazoid was in the room, they’d be able to tell, and quite vividly.

She felt an intense dismay at the social faux pas, though she was certain the Lieutenant meant no ill will. Lieutenant Yellir and herself had had limited opportunity to talk outside of their respective duties, but when the Yellikan Lieutenant had overseen a damage control drill on the Holodeck, she’d been the very picture of professionalism. It was quite likely that it was just as lapse of memory - Gila’s promotion was rather recent, and the whole CloQ debacle that followed was sure to have superseded the award ceremony in the Yellikan’s mind - but that didn’t stop Gila from feeling insulted, belittled, disrespected- Well, you get the idea.

oO She’s an alien, Gila. Calm yourself. You didn’t even want the promotion in the first place, what’s WRONG with you!? Oo

Sadar: Uhm- I mean, that’s… L-Lieutenant Yellir! Wh-What can I do for you?

Yellikan’s clearly had no empathic or telepathic abilities, for the clueless Chief Engineer just continued her business.

Yellir: If its not too busy here already— I was wondering if I could get a once over? I haven’t been for a physical since my last promotion ::chuckling::.

oO Ah yes, speaking of promotions- Oo

Sadar: ::clears throat:: I, uh, yes, o-of course. Sit on a biobed, a-and I’ll get right to you… ::remembers her manners:: Uh, please.

The quick jaunt over to fetch the medical cart was conducted at a speed far below what Gila usually mustered when a patient was waiting for her, but it gave her some breathing room to get her bristling mood under control. She felt cold sweat between her nuchial folds, and the feeling was extremely unwelcome. It was itchy, but she couldn’t very well address the issue right now.

Unfortunately, the medical cart was always placed in an optimal position in Sickbay, so what breathing room she got only lasted for a couple of moments, before she was back with the Lieutenant and had to face the frankly surprising dismay her simple mistake had caused.

Sadar: S-So, Lieutenant, any specific health concerns? Between being held hostage in Main Engineering, retaking the Artemis from Jem’Hadar and getting into a firefight with a Betazed warship, you’ve seen a lot of ::hesistant pause:: conflict in the recent past. Must’ve been… An overwhelming couple of months…

oO Overwhelming enough to forget something important like the proper rank and file of your subordinates. See, logical explanation, no need to be so- Oo

Yellir: Response

oO Never mind. Oo

Sadar: Of course, but even if the events didn’t take place in this reality, the memories and experiences could be enough to trigger psychosomatic symptoms. Phantom pains, nightmares… Loss of memory.

Yellir: Response

Sadar: Oh… I-I’m, uhh, pleased to hear that, Sir… ::awkward pause:: I-I’ll start with a neurological scan. It’s not yet ascertained whether time travel or dimension-hopping has a specific effect on the neurological health of species living on linear time, but… Never be too careful.

Yellir: Response
