Now that the rocks had been sanitized and one of them was nuzzled safely in the Vibratome, it was just a matter of time before Sam and Jovenan would get to see the inside of the specimen.

Richards: This is my favorite part. ::Balling up her hands and shaking them quickly:: I can’t wait to see what’s inside!

Jovenan laughed, which Sam took as a good indication she was also excited.

A small chime indicated that the split was complete. Sam lifted the clear covering and gently pulled out the rock as a whole.

Once it was set down, the two parts fell away from each other. Sam screwed up her face in curiosity and confusion.

Richards: ::Looking between Jovenan and the split rock:: What is that?

Jovenan: I’m… I’m not sure. ::reaches out to pick one half up before stopping:: May I?

She respected the respect. Sam had come across many other scientists that helped themselves in the middle of someone else’s project. She trusted Jovenan, and was quite grateful to have someone there with her to witness whatever the discovery was.

Richards: ::Holding her hand out towards the two halves:: Absolutely.

The CSO lifted the rock closer to her eyes and examined it in the light. Sam did the same with the other half, looking intently at the structural layout of the inside. It was far different than what she had expected. But that was the beauty of science.

Jovenan: That is a much more complex structure than I’ve seen inside such a small rock before. My first instinct says that it could be a fossil, based on the structure. Chemically, as far as I can visually tell, I’m not very confident that is the case, though. What do you think?

Richards: It does have similar markers to a fossil, but you’re right. It doesn’t seem to completely match what we would normally see. This is intriguing. ::excitedly:: I have no idea what this is!

The joy of new discoveries had always been one of Sam’s favorite feelings.

Richards: We need to run more tests. Where should we start?

Jovenan: Well, this is your project. What’s the next step, boss?

She almost cringed at the words. Boss. Something she wasn’t fond of being called in any instance, even in a simple context, it felt inherently wrong.

With the thoughts pushed to the side, Sam grabbed her PADD and set up a checklist.

Richards: I have a small hunch this might be a fossilized egg. I think we should start with scans and a 3D model, that will give us a better visual to what it looked like as a whole.

Jovenan: Response

With a nod and a smile, Sam set the two pieces up to be scanned. She took more than she probably needed, but that was on brand for her. Always more than needed. After multiple surface, midline and deep scans ran, the holodisplay was ready to show them the model.

Richards: While we examine this I have sediment tests going. That should give us an idea of how old it is and if it contained living organisms or DNA at any point.

Jovenan: Response

Sam moved the holodisplay slowly, getting multiple angles of the rock. She used a few color filters to see if that would give it any more definition. She stopped on a blue filter that showed hard dark vein-like lines sprawling through the inside. It almost looked similar to the root system of a mature plant.

Richards: If this is an egg, it had to have been in the very early stages. There’s no definitive base, if anything, barely a yolk.. If it’s not an egg, it's back to the drawing board.

Sam handed Jovenan the PADD with a smile.

Richards: The sediment results should be up soon. Can you read them off to me when they come through?

Jovenan: Response
