(( Hydroponics Bay - Deck 9, USS Artemis-A ))

D’tin had just talked about plants. A lot. She tended to do this when people came to the Hydroponics Bay. Ikaixar had wandered into the trap that not even the Ensign knew existed. Thankfully she processed this with enough time to act reasonably

Breys: I know this is a ton of information, the rack has a good few flowers on it. Feel free to ask me about any one you like in particular. I can also tell you about more medicinal plants like a sleep aid if you’d like.

She was pleased by some of their results. Ikaixar seemed interested in both the snow bush and yattin flower. D’tin had worked hard to grow a wide selection of samples, and she was happy for it to net fruitful results.

Ikaixar: That would be wonderful, Ensign. If I may ask, on the Horizon we had seeds for these these plants called Praetor roses, they grew on the lips of volcanoes on the planet Altemid.

D’tin had heard of them, the ones nearest to the heat formed an amber shell around themselves to protect themselves from the environment further. Out of plants that could get close to a volcano, these were some of the most resilient.

Ikaixar: The nectar was incredibly viscous, it was a natural pain killer and the petals had this strange… almost iridescent dust to them.

Breys: I’ve read a paper about them! I wish we had a sample here. I’ve always wondered what they feel like to hold. What was it like growing them?

Ikaxair laughed a laugh of deep displeasure.

Ikaixar: I left before we could plant the seeds, I wanted to study the dust on the petals. I wondered if the dust helped the roses survive extreme heat— the samples we found had practically sprouted like weeds on the slopes of active volcanoes.

Breys: I’ll submit a seed transfer request. They have to accept it if they’re the only ship in the fleet with those seeds. It could take quite some time to show up due to the Artemis’s location, but you should get a chance to study them! Maybe they’ll show up with the next batch of Ensigns?

As they walked Ikaixar stopped for a moment and reached towards the same red flower she had held in her hands when the Ensign surprised her. She let the leaves run through her fingers. D’tin knew the gentle grip of its pinprick with exact detail.

Ikaixar: What’s your favourite thing you’ve grown here?

The Science Officer stopped herself from jumping up and down in excitement, but the obvious beaming smile came through even with all her effort. She paused for a moment, gathered herself, and tried to talk professionally.

Breys: I love so many things here, I’d say it’s hard to pick a favorite, and it was, but I’ve already spent so much time thinking about it that I think I know. There is this vine. ::she starts walking quickly:: It comes from Bajor and I brought the cutting with me. The plant life on Bajor is so diverse. This one is so large that it will eat small mammals. Oh, it’s carnivorous. I forgot to say that. I feed it replicated meat, it can’t tell the difference. There were stories of people getting caught in a plant and losing limbs deep in the forest, and I was part of the team sent to investigate. Don’t worry it won’t take your limb, I keep it well fed and it doesn’t like the taste of arm. It tried to get me once when it first arrived and it rejected the arm. It’s got such a personality though and it blooms every few years. The one I had back on Bajor put awe in me whenever it did. Oh! I nearly forgot. They’re called long blight.

She had failed at her attempt at professionalism. After taking a breath D’tin turned bright red for likely the dozenth time today.

Ikaixar: Response

Breys: I didn’t mean to ramble like that. I really love them. ::she perks up, both more excited and more red:: I have a paper on their diets..

Ikaixar: Response

They approached a plant that consisted of a web of thin tendrils, only a few hairs wide, and that had spread several feet over the floor. It was covered in large buds with a deeper green hue than the rest of the plant. It almost reminded her of asparagus from Earth. D’tin grabbed a hunk of replicated meat from a nearby cold storage area, and threw it like a frisbee at the tangle of vines. Before it even touched the ground they curved upwards and with a splash of blood the piece of meat vanished from sight..

Breys: Tada!

Ikaixar: Response
