(( Holodeck 3 – Deck 3, USS Artemis-A ))
Alex worked with the Kobali through several little tweaks to her handling of the weapon or her stance or to her aim, but she seemed to understand and make the adjustments easily.
Storm: ::Reinitiate her PADD and sets up the next scenario.:: Let’s try this one.
Vhysa’lia: What’s the goal?
The holodeck melted away and was replaced with a recreation of the mess hall aboard the Artemis, complete with crewmembers frozen in time in the middle of dining
Storm: Okay. Obviously, what you’ve got here is the mess hall on the Artemis. What’s going to happen is you’re going to see different people change from themselves into specters of the selves like this.
Alex sensed Vhysa’lia’s unease, but she forged ahead. She had a reason for what she was doing.
Storm: When you see that, that is your target. You’ll gain points for hitting the correct target. You’ll lose points for hitting someone who is not a target.
Alex pressed her lips together in the hopes that the Kobali would be able to calm her nerves and perform well.
Vhysa’lia: If you’re say so…
Storm: Ready?
Vhysa’lia: As, I’ll ever be, Lieutenant.
Alex took the deep breath that she wished Vhysa’lia would have taken instead.
Vhysa’lia: I hope this isn’t some sort of trick simulation, sir.
Alex nodded at the provisional JayGee. She seemed to understand one part of the exercise, but not the other.
Storm: No trick. ::To the computer:: Computer begin simulation.
Storm watched and sensed Vhysa’lia fire and internally squirm. Two shots went wide before a third struck its target. A similar cycle to this continued until the program timed out. The scenario remained in place, but it was greyed out and frozen in time. This time there were as many misses as there were hits.
Vhysa’lia: Firing on people in the mess hall. It just feels wrong…?
Storm input several things into the PADD she was holding. She looked at the Kobali with a great deal of sympathy.
Storm: It does, doesn’t it?
Vhysa’lia: So, did I pass…? ::uneasy laugh:: I think the whole premise threw me off.
Alex tucked her PADD under her arm and walked over to one of the empty tables and took a seat
Storm: Join me Lieutenant. ::Gesturing to the seat opposite her. Alex crossed her legs under the table and waited for counterpart to sit.::
Vhysa’lia: Response
Alex already knew the answer to her question, but it was important for her to ask and the Kobali to answer.
Storm: So what about the premise threw you off?
Vhysa’lia: Response
Alex listened with practiced ease, understanding Vhysa’lia’s frustration. When the medical officer gave the answer, Alex laid one hand on the table palm open for emphasis.
Storm: Exactly! You knew these people. Or you think you did.
Vhysa’lia: Response
Storm: Have you ever considered that your crewmates and friends could be taken over - either by illness, or by mind control or by means of replication - that they may not be your crewmates? And in a case like that if you determine that they are not who they say they are - shooting them - in most cases on stun - is the right thing to do.
Vhysa’lia: Response
