((Sickbay, USS Artemis-A))
The young ensign’s altercation with the two Andorian Imperial Guardsmen had been, it seemed, if not explicitly forgiven and forgotten; then at least, put to one side for the time being. The ensign watched the Captain’s eyes scan the Padd that displayed his orders. Perhaps the Captain considered it none of her business, as he was only now reporting for duty; but, this rang false. More likely, he reasoned, the Captain was waiting until she had a fuller of picture of the new young Ensign assigned to her ship.
MacKenzie: Well it seems everything is in order here… ::handing the PADD to Adea:: I suppose you can sign off on your portion of this.
The Betazoid Doctor pressed his thumb on the Padd. Bip! The Padd signaled the Doctor’s authorization had been recognized.
Adea: There we go.
Tho’Bi: ::nods at Adea:: Thank you, Doctor. ::nods at MacKenzie:: Thank you, Captain.
MacKenzie offered a friendly smile. The Doctor perched upon the Biobed; taking the opportunity to take some weight of his leg.
MacKenzie: Well, with that business taken care of, tell me a little bit about yourself. How did you find yourself to the Artemis?
He had heard so many stories while at the Academy. Cadets from outside the Federation, there by the grace of scholarships and hard grind. Children of two or more worlds. His was so mundane in contrast; in the words of the Imperial Guardsmen, he was a ‘Starfleet Brat’.
Tho’Bi: My parents were both engineers in Starfleet. I grew up on ships and stations. Skies are nice, but I prefer Jefferies Tubes :: smiles ::
The young ensign waited to see if his joke would land. They never did, but maybe today…
The Doctor smirked. Had his joke landed? The Captain offered a half smile and slow nod. Crash landed.
Adea: What are the twinkling lights of a power conduit if not our version of the stars?
Crash and burn. The Captain nodded out of courtesy, rather than interest.
MacKenzie: I suppose you have a point, Doctor.
The first time he was on planet, he couldn’t understand where the stars had gone. He was used to seeing them all the time. He had never really gotten used to the daytime sky masking them. The young ensign was brought back to the sickbay by the Doctor, pointing as a door with the tip of his cane. The Doctor heaved himself off the biobed.
Adea: My office is back there, Ensign - my door is always open to you. For now, however, I have other patients to see to, so I shall leave you in the Captain’s capable hands. ::he nodded to the Captain:: Addison. ::he nodded to Tho’Bi:: Ensign.
The Captain smiled. And with a swoosh of teal lab coat, the Doctor headed for his office.
MacKenzie: So, Ensign… I imagine you’re up to speed with the Artemis systems and its latest mission logs?
When not helping out in the cramped, dimly lit, sweat soaked engine room of the civilian transport, the ensign had spent his journey in his dingy, windowless cabin; reading through the system schematics, technical specifications, and mission logs of the Artemis.
Tho’Bi: :: Nods :: Yes, Captain.
MacKenzie: Very good, I’m glad to hear that. I assume that since you just beamed up, you haven’t had a chance to meet any of the others in your department yet?
The young ensign had been dreading these early interactions with his new crew. He was fine, once up to speed with people. Until he was up to speed with people, he was not.
Tho’Bi: No, Captain. Not yet.
The Captain nodded.
MacKenzie: I would recommend starting with Ensign Imril. He’s also relatively new to the ship.
Tho’Bi: :: nodded :: Ensign Imril. Yes, Captain.
MacKenzie: Very good. Do you have any questions for me before I leave you to it?
Tho’Bi: Where do I… ermm. Where’s my …rack? Bunk …Place. Sleep… Thing. :: points at Padd :: Is it on… :: nods more to himself :: It’s on the Padd, right? Captain, Sir.
He was beginning to wish the Captain had just thrown him in the brig for shoving the Andorian.
MacKenzie: Response.
