(( Science Lab 3, Deck 9 - USS Artemis-A ))
The rest of the team departed towards the holodeck with ValhJeahn. Sam turned back towards the now empty lab and approached the counter where the crystal sat.
Richards: It’s just you and me now little buddy.
A couple sharp kicks from one of the babies reminded her she wasn’t alone with the rock.
Richards: Yes. ::Rubbing her hand across her belly:: You both are here too. Us three and this rock.
The quick chat with her little passengers seemed to be all they needed to settle down and let her focus on her work.
With most of the equipment already set up for her use, she had to decide against using the ultrasonic vibratome. Knowing that the crystal has some type of charge effect but not knowing exactly what set it off, there was a hazard in using heat or vibrations.
First she moved the crystal to the electronic microscope. Getting a closer look at the inside of the crystal was important. With her PADD at her side, notes were being taken down as discoveries were made.
//Boraxian Crystal-
Color: To the naked eye, the crystal emits a bright red color. Under the microscope the colors have hues of pink and purple. Small black speckle-like nodes are indicated in the core.
Size: Length-38.1mm. Circumference approx.-12.7mm. Weight approx 140 grams.
Crystal is heavy in comparison to its size.
Composition: Some of the alien elements are previously undiscovered. Adding them to the Starfleet database for further inspection.
Notes: The crystal contains piezoelectric properties. Contains a trigonal crystalline lattice. Based on similar systems, they could be presented as hexagonal also.//
As Sam continued her research, something felt familiar about it but tried not to get too far ahead of herself as she jotted down her notes.
She was completely in the zone, just her-the babies- and the crystal. It was everything she had always hoped for. Everything that she worked so hard to do. Being on a Starfleet ship, in a science lab, making new discoveries. Her dream wasn’t just in motion, it was alive and made her feel incredibly proud of herself. The incredible feeling was short lived as a strange wave of pain crept up on her. Radiating through her body. Almost like what she had felt before during the attempted ritual, but this time, a little stronger and just a tad debilitating.
Just like before, it dissipated quickly and she was able to regroup and go back to her work. On her mind though was the wonder if the ritual taking place in the holodeck was affecting her from that far away. Although, it wasn’t calming by any means.
Sam shrugged it off and ignored the fact that what she was experiencing might have had nothing to do with the ritual, or as a reaction to the crystal. Ignorance was bliss… For now.
After she ran some more scans and stared at her PADD for what felt like forever, a realization struck her.
Richards: These are just like dilithium crystals…
The composition. Their properties. The only real difference was instead of converting to energy used for warp, they were used to convert energy for the Boraxians themselves.
Richards: You little rock buddy, may just have made a huge break in this mystery.
Knowing that the crystal could potentially be a resource to them similar to dilithium opened the door to many more possibilities. Potential enemies. More interference. The likelihood that they were an integral part of the alien society was huge.
She tucked the crystal safely into a sealed containment tube and held it tightly in her grip after she cleaned up her area and tucked her PADD into her bag.
Sam as quickly as possible waddled her way to the holodeck.
((Holodeck 4, Deck 3 - USS Artemis-A ))
Her excitement got the better of her as she emerged into the holodeck where the rest of the team stood.
Richards: It’s not just a rock!
Morgan/Imril/ValhJeahn: Response
She took a few calming breaths, looking around at the others. Unsure if she interrupted the ritual.
Richards: Uh.. The crystal. I’ll spare you the science talk, but its basic composition is the same as our dilithium. Instead of being charged for warp. They are charged for their people. ::Waving her hands around in front of her:: Same basic principle.
Morgan/Imril/ValhJeahn: Response
((OOC: Go ahead to whoever writes in the holodeck scene next to add Sam back in wherever it fits!))
