(( Security Center - Deck 08, USS Artemis-A ))
Even though Gila had completed the training with a passing score, Savel had made several observations that he wanted to address with her. Before she left, he'd grabbed up a phaser of his own and walked over to stand next to her. While talking her through what he was doing, he would stop and wait for her to mirror his actions before continuing.
Savel: Your phaser is a simple tool which, regardless of its setting, should only be used for one purpose. The protection of yourself or someone that cannot defend themself. Do not think of it as an instrument to do harm, even if it may have that capability. It is only a defense mechanism, one that you hold in your hand and fully control. It will only do as you program it to, and no one can force you to do differently. ::after a beat:: Set your phaser to kill, Lieutenant.
Sadar: ::whispers:: An instrument to... Defend.
She switched the settings to kill.
Savel: Using your phaser comes with an immense responsibility, no matter if it is set to stun, disrupt, or kill. This includes being completely certain on which setting you have chosen, and what you wish to discharge your phaser at. While an actual situation will likely require an immediate, quick decision from you, I want you to approach our current situation logically. We are in a training holosuite, with holographically generated phasers. There are safeties in place to prevent harm befalling either one of us, or anyone who may enter. You are aimed at a similarly holographically generated target, which does not represent any living thing. Allow this logic to dispel and suppress your fear that holding such a weapon may generate, then I want you to engage the target. You may take your time, Lieutenant. Remember to double-check your setting, and keep your eyes on your target as you fire. Proceed when ready.
Even without any expertise in studying the mind of other species, Savel was at the very least able to recognize fear. Especially in Lt. Sadar as she handled the phaser. It was clear that she'd need to conquer that fear, suppress it, in order to adequately handle any weapon. Even in a training environment such as this one.
The best way the Vulcan knew to combat fear, or any emotion, was through the use of logic. Some criticized the logical approach common to most Vulcans to be too narrow. It didn't allow for considerations of ideas that weren't grounded in logic, but that seemed to be exactly what Gila needed at the moment. Logic would focus her in on the present, where it was near impossible for her to do any harm with the phaser she held in her hand. There was no need to let the mind consider what a real phaser might do. It was not a possibility for either one of them while they were in the holosuite.
Savel realized this would likely only him in this one particular instance, but that is all he concerned himself with for now. It also seemed to be working, so he was not going to protest any positive result following his instructions.
Sadar: R-Ready...
He remained silent as she announced that she was finally ready. The entire time he'd been focused on her, but hardly moved a muscle. Everything about him was still, even though somewhat expressive brows. He was curious and studying the Mizarian as she processed her own thoughts mixed in with his offered advice.
Her movements seemed more deliberate now, much less fumbling than he'd seen during her actual testing. Perhaps she'd actually started to put some of his teaching into practice. Or she'd suddenly become comfortable with using a phaser. At the risk of coming across as arrogant, he assumed the former to be the more logical conclusion.
The only time that he looked away, was just before she fired and the beam shot out from the emitter on the front of the phaser to streak across the room and find a home on target. Even if what followed wasn't exactly the definition of grace. A shudder pushed through her body, causing it to spasm but Savel didn't focus much on that. Instead he watched as the target registered her hit before he finally turned back to look at her once more.
Sadar: ::anxious breathing: H-H... ::looks to Savel::
Savel: A good hit, Lieutenant Sadar.
As high of a praise as one might get from a Vulcan.
Sadar: ... I-It worked? I- ::hastily lowers the phaser settings and places it on the table behind her:: Th-Thank you, Lieutenant! I... ::deep breath:: Y-Your advice was... ::smiles:: Very helpful.
Savel: It was a simple application of logic, nothing more. It would serve you well to continue doing so in other areas of your work. ::walking back over to the range control console:: We could attempt another program, or practice more fundamentals if you wish, Lieutenant.
He looked back briefly to see what she thought of continuing, but immediately could see she was ready to be done.
Sadar: Oh, uhhh, n-no. ::scratches her cheek:: I-I think that may be, uhh... I-I don’t think my heart could take another round just yet. B-But... I-If you wouldn’t mind, I’d like your assistance again sometime.
Savel: Very well, Lieutenant Sadar. I am always available to assist with any training upon request. You are welcome to request me personally or call upon the services of any other qualified officer, whatever your preference.
He tapped away at a few of the console commands before another series of targets presented themselves on the range. They went through a series of lateral movements and rotations while changing colors every so often. It looked somewhat similar to what she'd gone through, but looked to be something a bit more advanced.
Then he turned back to walk in her direction, but ultimately went to the weapons station.
Savel: I will remain here for some time, as we still have the holosuite assigned to us. I again welcome you to stay and join me, but your phaser training has concluded. I will submit the appropriate report to your training records.
Sadar: Response
Her reply to his offer was as expected, so he simply offered a single nod of his head to affirm that he'd heard it.
Savel: Understood, Lieutenant. I look forward to our next meeting then.
Sadar: Response
Once she started to make her way out of the holosuite, he grabbed up one of the phasers and decided it was time to get back to work. He might as well test out some of his own skills since he had the range to himself.
It was only logical.
