(( Bridge, USS Artemis-A, “Present Day” ))

Jaseb's communicator beeped once again after a short while. As he answered, he felt a surge of enthusiasm upon hearing Chief Ral's voice on the other end. With eager anticipation, Jaseb waited as Chief Ral confirmed that the scientists had agreed to modify the probes as Adea had requested and had already set out to make it happen.

Chevalier: Sir, Chief Ral and her team with scientists are on their way to modify the probes. ETA five minutes.

Ensign Kel was visibly burdened with worries as he turned to Chevalier, clicking his teeth.

Kel: I don’t like us flying blind and planning an ambush. For all we know they could come at us from behind, fire off a torpedo and -boom- hull breach on all decks.

Adea/Yellir: Response

Kel expressed his discontent through a grunt which was quite evident. He seemed to be dissatisfied with the response he received.

Kel: Well it’s just, not ideal from a security standpoint.

Jaseb reluctantly agreed with Ensign Kel, even though he did not want to. Everything was silent despite the Empress fleet's presence. One would expect them to send scouts or bombard the nebula to ignite the gases and drive them out. But nothing like that was happening.

It was only them and Nebula. Betazoids were nowhere to be seen.

Chevalier: ::whispers to Kel:: I feel it too, Solas. Something is not right.

The bridge crew monitored the situation and prepared to strike against the Betazoid Empress. Reports came in. A decision has been made, and now all attention is on carrying out the given orders.

Adea/Yellir: Response

Kel: How…. Telepathic do you have to be for the Ganzfield to have an effect on you?

Solas' question caught Jaseb off guard. One might expect him to search for the theory in the computer's database. However, the more Jaseb thought about it, the more he considered that the theory was possibly classified due to its potential consequences.

Jaseb looked at him and noticed him running his fingers up around the tips of his ears. He immediately regretted his mistake of classifying Kel as a Bajoran due to his lack of attention. However, upon noticing Kel's ears and how he was focused on them, it became apparent that Ensign Kel was actually a half-breed. This realization explained his concerns and objections.

Chevalier nodded towards Solas, trying to calm him down.

Chevalier: Every piece counts, but we will protect you, ensign Kel. Don’t worry. Everything will be okay.

Adea/Yellir: Response

Chevalier monitored the probes' modification progress, paying little attention to what was happening on the bridge. The data looked good, but the modification turned out to be simpler than Jaseb expected.

He smiled when confirmation came. The modifications were done, and they could proceed with the plan. Finally, all the stress, worries, expectations, and concerns would turn into a simple, straightforward adrenaline rush—and in the end, they would either live or die, but this hell would finally be over.

Jaseb laid a hand on the side of his chest, on his uniform, which was clean and without all the pain and that pain Jaseb felt inside. He was not in physical pain, but his body and mind remembered the pain. It remembered the plasma from the Jem'Hadar's disruptor burning through his flesh; it remembered the molten duranium burning his nerves, poisoning his blood; he recalled how he felt helpless and on the verge of death, down there, on Betazed.

The console emitted two beeps.

Chevalier looked down with empty and tired eyes, then laid his hand on the console.

Chevalier: My team confirmed the probes are modified and ready, sir. ::turns to Kel:: Ensign Kel, we need to coordinate the launch of torpedoes and probes.

Kel: Response

Jaseb continued inputting the instructions for his team while he turned to Commander Adea.

Chevalier: Sir, everything is ready. Awaiting your instructions.

Adea: Response

Ensign Chevalier completed the power settings and communication protocol with Betazoids and probes; when he started a ten second countdown, he sent it to Kel’s console for cooperation.

Chevalier: Channel o…

Chevalier’s and Kel’s consoles emitted a single warning beep. Jaseb looked at the viewscreen, watching as the sensors detected an incoming object and tracked its movement. At first glance, Jaseb did not recognize what that thing was, but his brain screamed in recognition the whole time as the tricobalt torpedo was slowly spinning towards the Artemis bridge.

Adea/Kel/Yellir: Response

It was too late to do anything.

Jaseb smiled as he faced his demise. He welcomed death as a release from suffering, feeling no fear.

And then, everything just ended. He closed his eyes - awaiting impact - and let the world turn into a blinding white light…

(( Compartment 12, Sector 07, Deck 5 - Jaseb’s quarters ))

Jaseb's body collided with a resounding thud against the unyielding bulkhead of the ship. His breath was knocked out of him, and he gasped for air, feeling the sting of pain in his chest.

The sweat-drenched blanket clung tightly to his skin, its dampness in a stark contrast against the cold, unforgiving metal of the ship's floor. Despite the warmth of the blanket, Jaseb shivered uncontrollably, his teeth chattering as he struggled to regain his bearings.

He untangled himself from the blanket and got up quickly. He picked up a t-shirt from a nearby chair and put it on. He ran out of his room and across the shared living room to open the door to the second room but was greeted only by darkness and emptiness. The room was deserted and dark, with no sign that anyone had ever lived in it. But Jaseb remembered. He remembered Vulcan with golden hair…

Ensign leaned against the wall, letting his whole body slide down the cold metal. He curled up on the floor, and tears burst from his eyes…
