K’Wara: Yes... Grief, more than most other things, makes us realize that the tomorrow we think will come is not promised to us. It’s a hard lesson, one of the hardest most of us will ever learn.

Tamio certainly thought so, and looking at the usually jovial officer seated in front of them, it was hard to disagree with oneself. Well, at least, harder than it usually was.

Bergmen: I think I understand… now.

K’Wara: ::smiles:: Would that it were so... Regardless, take what time you require. These things will take time, and we can make allowances.

Olliver hugged the PADD tightly to his chest, nodding along. Tamio wasn’t certain whether they’d been able to give any assurances or aid to the struggling officer, but they hoped so, even if this journey was an entirely personal one that Olliver had to undertake.

Bergmen: So, if that’s all, I will return to my duties and… just send me the materials and list of participants, and I will enter my leave into the system as soon as I know more, okay?

K’Wara: Of course. Thank you for your help, Olliver. And if you need anything more, my door is always open.

A novel concept, given the starkly anti-social behaviour of the previous two Chiefs (or so Tamio had understood it), and almost every officer that had received that offer had balked like Tamio had just single-handedly figured out the first secret of the universe. Olliver, understandably, had other things on his mind, but Tamio nonetheless wanted to extend the offer.

Bergmen: Permission… to leave?

The voice was hesitant, quiet, so heavy with the perplexing emotions the finality of life must’ve evoked in him, that for a second Tamio didn’t respond, which was apparently taken as a self-imposed faux pas by the Lieutenant. He stood straighter, more stern.

Bergmen: ::more serious and certain in his voice:: Permission to leave, sir.

K’Wara: Granted, Lieutenant. I’ll see you later.

And with that, Olliver left.

Tamio sat down in their chair, planting their face in one hand as they reclined in the chair. This was not at all what Tamio had expected their first hurdle to be when they accepted the Chief position, but at the same time, they were reassured by the fact that they were the one to take this conversation, and not Lieutenant Vailani.

Still...

oO What have you saddled me with, Ava? Oo

They made a quick note to check-in with Olliver soon, either before his leave or immediately after. Preferably something fun... They wondered if Olliver liked rock music.
