((Crashed Jem'Hadar Fighter - Outskirts of the Bantlox Colony, Laoi III ))

Breathing heavily from the effort Vitor sat down, and pulled the Jem’Hadar rifle forward.

Morgan: Hey, Sil – watch where you point that thing!

Vitor raised an eyebrow and rolled his eyes.

Silveira: Sure Doc. ::He set down the rifle on his lap, and pulled the eyepiece, handing it to Imril:: This is what you're looking for, right?

Imril: And hopefully looking through. ::Weak laugh::

Morgan: So, how do we use it?

Vitor took another deep breath and closed his eyes. The climbing about looked to have taken a bit out of him.

Silveira: We put it around our neck?

The way Vitor was holding the the thing, it was easy to see how one might mistake it for something secured to the back of the neck. A thin band of grey metal bent in a rough ‘c’ shape connected two metal boxes, one of which held the eyepiece.

Imril: Over your head, like a pair of headphones. Here, let me take that.

The engineer took the item from the Tactical officer, and tested its weight in their hands. The thing felt heavier than it looked. Probably for the best, as the density had probably saved it from being destroyed with its user. The eyepiece itself was shaped as a rectangle with a notch cut out of one corner. A pair of glowing lines ran around the edges.

Imril held the device out from their head and looked at the rifle through the eyepiece’s glass-like frame. They saw nothing through it which could not be seen with naked eyes.

Morgan’s brow furrowed again, and he pointed at the eyepiece, then the rifle.

Morgan: Can you see anything… helpful?

Vitor finally got his breathing in a regular pace and leaned forward. He raised his hand to Kyle.

Silveira: Let Imril settle in with it, Kyle. That isn’t an LCARS system

Imril: I think I actually have to wear it. This box on the other side, here, that’s a neural interface of some sort. The units the Niners found had no security lockouts. Ordinarily, I’d make sure this one didn’t with my tricorder, but… Well, the rest of this ship didn’t have any security going on, did it?

Imril stiffened their spine, and raised the device to their head. The eyepiece on a path towards their left eye.

Vitor looked to Imril with a trusting face. skills.

Silveira: Remember baby steps. Take it slowly, the last thing we want is the ship firing.

Imril: I’m in no hurry, trust me. OK, a little hurry. This isn’t the best-smelling place for -- Eiaah!

The instant Imril put the thing atop their head, a soundless keening started behind their eyes. The beginning of a headache. They could see their fellow officers with their left eye, but as an uncomfortable double image. It was a dizzying experience.

Morgan: Response

Silveira: C’mon Ensign, time to show us that famed Engineering magic

Imril: It will be magic enough if I can keep standing. Wow. I can’t tell if I’m looking at you two through the eyepiece, or if the image of you is being stamped directly onto my brain, or both.

Morgan/Silveira: response

Imril: Give me, give me a moment. I think I’m getting used to it. There’s no control panel to look at or blink commands to. Just a view of the space around me. ::Looking towards the rifle, focusing on it:: Oh! Found the zoom function!

Imril shook their head, resetting their focus. They reached out with their hand. Offering their wrist light to whoever would take it.

Imril: I have an idea. Someone take that outside, please, and shine it around the walls of the corridor we passed.

Morgan/Silveira: response

The din inside their skull was already getting louder. Annoying but not painful. At least, not yet. Brow furrowed against the discomfort, Imril stared at the wall near the door and ‘past’ it. Imagining themselves looking through a window to whatever may appear on the other side. They saw flashes of the light streaking about on a bulkhead.

Imril: Yeah, I'm looking through the wall into the other corridor. This thing might be responding to micro-movements of my eye. Tracking where I’m trying to focus and showing me what’s there. Either that, or it's drilling into my brain to work out which way I want to look. Hard to tell which.

Morgan/Silveira: response

Back to the rifle they looked. Focusing more intently on the section which held the energy cells and plasma batteries. Imagining the shape and feel of them. Directing their eyes to look past the rifle’s outer casing. The effort only seemed to enhance the unquieting effect of wearing the device, which officially ratcheted up to a headache.

Imril: ::Wincing:: No good. It’s not acknowledging any energy traces at all. Just applying zoom-and-enhance filters to the outside of the weapon. But I think we can piece together a full spherical view of the ship with this thing. It’s just a matter of staring in the right direction and seeing what system or systems are active. I’m open to other ideas.

They pulled the device from their head, and gasped with relief as the headache instantly faded. They could and would endure wearing the device more if they had to. But unless they were actively doing something with it, they did not want to let the headache get any stronger while it idled. Better to have the thing disconnected from their brain while the superior officers discussed the options.

Morgan/Silveira: response

(OOC: According to Memory Alpha, the headache will take longer to start for Humans, should Morgan or Silveira decide to take the device from Imril)
