(( Holodeck 3 – Deck 3, USS Artemis-A ))
Alex tapped the PADD to bring it out of hibernation mode. She looked over at the Kobali as she was taking one more look at the few scores that were in their file.
Storm: So I was going over your last certification. ::Points to the info from her last cert on the PADD.:: It doesn’t have a lot of information other than straight scores. I can usually garner a good starting place from the things that it’s not telling me, so why don’t we start with some easy drills and we can go from there. How’s that sound?
Vhysa’lia: I’m surprised my “scores” even made it over… ::shrugging:: That sounds sensible. ::little mock bow, arms outstretched:: I’m in your hands, Lieutenant Storm.
Alex gave an easy smile but she reached out to see if she could sense the JayGee was flirting with her. For a moment, she stook looking at her PADD as a mask for trying to figure out why she couldn’t tell, when she realized that the Lietenant was Kobali. She wouldn’t be able to sense anything - even vehement hatred.
It’s an interesting sensation when you’re used to other people give off emotions or an impression of what they are feeling to suddenly have that cut completely off, and you’re left with observations which can be such an imprecise science - if a science at all. If anyone else had their sight taken away from them without warning, that’s what it felt like to Alex - just as tangible - just as immense.
But unwilling to let anything on, Alex responded with a nonchalant manner …
Storm: Well, let’s see how you fare with this.
On her PADD, Alex set up a colored moving dots scenario. Each time the Lieutenant hit a target, the next one would move a little faster. If she missed a target it continued moving at the same speed. It really was not much than a warm up. This would let her know if she had any real ability with a phaser.
Vhysa’lia: Wonderful! And is there a model you recommend using…? Or that I’m supposed to use for this recertification? I’m unfamiliar with the entire gamut of options that are available to Starfleet officers… or which ones I might be permitted to use.
Being a provisional officer, she wasn’t completely sure at times what fell into the category of “not for you”. Not that there were many restrictions, but every so often when they’d been poking into things, there had been one or two notices of things that were restricted to full Starfleet officers only. It wouldn’t surprise her if some of the more fancy and flashy weapons might be not permitted for general use at this time. Not that a recertification was time to experiment with things like that, but she was just curious anyways.
Storm: Let’s just work with a standard type 2 phraser. That’s what most tactical officers use for their recertifications anyway.
Vhysa’lia ordered a type 2 phaser. Alex watched them as she spent some time familiarizing herself with the weapon. She was glad that the JayGee seemed to take the use of the phaser seriously wanting ot make sure that she had a good feel for it before beginning.
Vhysa’lia: I’m ready, let’s do this!
Storm: Very well. ::Alex tapped several keys on the PADD and moving dots sprang to life. As the Lieutenant started, she hit most all of the dots. With each hit, they sped up. With the couple of misses, they stayed at the same speed. Overall, Alex was able to surmise that she had some talent with the weapon, but as the Betazoid watched them, the Tactical officer noted - in various ways, not just firing the weapon - there was plenty of room to improve too.
Vhysa’lia: So, is that enough to graduate me out of “useless” on an away team?
Storm: I definitely wouldn’t term you useless. You’ve got a good grasp - literally - of the weapon.
Vhysalia: Response
Storm: On the basic level, you scored a ninety percent which is nothing to sniff at. It’s a great jumping off point for a couple of other short simulations before we get on to the test itself.
Alex was taking scrolling through some of the other exercises deciding on where she would take the Kobali next. Marking several of the exercises, she nodded her head as she looked between the JayGee and her padd.
Vhysalia: Response
Alex finished making her choices for the next level of warm up - it was a combination of a couple of different drills, but she thought it would be a good next step to see how the Lieutenant would handle it. Looking up from the PADD with a smile, the Tactical Officer made eye contact with the medic.
Storm: So while I was watching the last exercise, I noticed a few simple things I can teach you to improve even on an easy exercise like the one you just finished, if you’re interested in learning.
Her suggestion was a both - and. She wanted to know if Vhysa’lia was interested in learning a few techniques as well as if she were teachable. Both would tell Alex something about the Kobali.
Vyhsa’lia: Response
