((Computer Core Upper Level - Deck 5 - USS Karnack))
MacKenzie: Is there any way to get more power from the warp core to actually get this thing up and running without frying it? We cook this computer and we’re all toast…
Brexis: Can we get power from non-essential systems and re-route them here?
She was the furthest thing away from an engineer. But she had enough basic knowledge to be somewhat helpful.
Breys: I think that’s the right idea, but instead of rerouting what if we closed off existing junctions between here and the warp core, forcing the plasma into a known path. It should concentrate our power while limiting throughput to the conduit’s capacity. I’ll need an extra hand to reorient the junctions. ::her breathing quickened, she pivoted on her heels:: If you support that decision sirs!
Munro: :: impressed :: I support it :: looks to MacKenzie :: It’s the most efficient way to direct the plasma flow. It also means we could shut down any systems we don’t need between the core and engineering and hopefully keep us insulated from the effects of the Maelstrom.
Bergmen: Response
Charlotte looked between the Captain and First Officer.
MacKenzie: Then let’s proceed.
Munro jumped in to help Breys with their task when the lights around them began to flicker. They quickly steadied, giving them sufficient lights.
Brexis: Do you think there are stored batteries somewhere? Or possibly a redundant fusion generator?
She turned to the others to see what they thought.
Breys: The ship’s batteries have probably been drained by the Malestrom. There is probably a generator somewhere on the ship, I don’t know where though.
Munro: Good thinking, Lieutenant. Bergmen, take Brexis and find a generator. There should be one in the lower section. Don’t wander too far, keep within eye contact with us. If you can’t see us or hear us you’ve gone too far.
Being talked to like she was a child who might wander off if something shiny caught her eye made her a bit annoyed. To be fair, everything was annoying her. It had nothing to do with the XO or even what she said. The whole situation in general had worn her thin. The sharp pain in her head from the dark things presence made her a bit grumpy.
Bergmen: Response
Brexis: We can do this. We have to. I think I can speak for all of us when I say we are ready to get the hells of this planet.
Charlotte didn’t wait for Ollie to take the lead on where to search for a possible generator.
Munro: You might be able to kickstart the generator and recharge the batteries that way. I think we’re gonna need them.
Brexis: If we can find it and it’s functional that’ll be our first priority.
Bergmen: Response
As she moved forward a bit more, the lights above them got brighter. It was a good sign.
Breys: ::pointing to the lights:: I think the warp core just got turned on, we just don’t have enough power to access anything. We need to find a way to insulate the room from the effects of the Maelstrom.
Munro: Well, we know from the Faraday Rooms that certain metals and alloys insulate systems from the effects of the Maelstrom :: points to the lights :: The fact that we have lights tells us that the warp core harmonics must cause a similar effects :: to MacKenzie :: Captain, this means that out theory about the shield emitters could work.
MacKenzie: That’s the best news I’ve heard all day.
Brexis: ::Mumbling to herself:: That’s not saying much…
She made her way down towards where Munro suggested the generator might be.
Bergmen: Response
Breys: What if we use every bit of juice we have to remodulate a force field around the computer core. When it passes the right frequency everything should flicker on for a moment, and we can narrow the range of the search with each pass until we're close enough to block off a notable amount of the maelstrom. It should only take a couple minutes, and we’ll at least have a weak force field while we’re looking. We can even stop at an adjacent frequency so we don’t overload the systems. That should lead to a power feedback loop where increased force field strength blocks out the Maelstrom, which increases force field strength till we reach equilibrium.
Munro: :: energised by the suggestion :: We’ll need to compensate for the electromagnetic flux, as it’s likely to destabilise the field harmonics :: thinks :: If we remodulated the deflector by reversing the shield polarity using the graviton emitters on this deck. It would act as a buffer?
With the increasingly loud growling from the dark things, Charlotte had to stop a few times to recenter herself, making vain attempts to shake off the pain in her head.
MacKenzie: Sounds like now we’re getting somewhere. Let’s do it.
Brexis: ::To Bergmen:: Do you know exactly what it is we are looking for?
Bergmen: Response
She gave him a nod and continued on.
Breys: Does anyone know how to manually remodulate a force field?
Munro: I guess that’s me -
MacKenzie: ::narrowing her eyes as she listened to the sound:: I believe they’ve breached the hull…
When she thought things couldn’t get worse… They did.
Brexis: ::To Bergmen:: Hey. Is it this big hunk of ::gesturing vaguely while squinting her eyes:: whatever this is.
It was a large blocky piece of machinery with a small control panel mounted to the side. There were no signs of light or life coming from it.
Bergmen/Breys: Response
Munro: I think that’s our cue to get a move on :: shouts down to Bergman and Brexis :: We’ll definitely need those batteries for the graviton emitters!
Brexis: ::Yelling back:: We are working on it!
Bergmen/Breys: Response
The power kept flickering on and off. It seemed to Charlotte like the Warp core was unstable. Then again, the brain fog from lack of sleep and the intense assault on her senses from the dark things were maybe affecting her more than she realized.
Munro: :: sighs :: The power flow isn’t consistent enough. One of the conduits must have failed. We’re gonna have to restore that first.
MacKenzie moved to the panel and began inputting commands.
MacKenzie: I’m going to see what I can do about trying to shunt power. You keep working on the forcefields.
Brexis: Ollie, I’m going to be honest. Aside from kicking this thing, I have no clue how to get it going.
Breys/Bergmen/Munro: Response
MacKenzie: ::shaking her head:: I don’t know why this isn't working. ::shouting:: Any luck with a generator?
She wondered if she should kick it…
Brexis: ::Yelling back to the captain:: We are trying!
Breys/Bergmen/Munro: Response
MacKenzie: Whatever we’re going to do, we’d better do it fast.
In a sheer moment of panic and exhaustion, Charlotte kicked the generator, right under the control panel.
The panel flickered before the generator began to whir to life.
Brexis: ::Shouting at no one in particular:: I kicked it! It’s turning on!
Breys/Bergmen/Munro/MacKenzie: Response
Charlotte shrugged at Ollie.
Brexis: Sometimes things just need kicking to work right. Percussive maintenance is what I think they call it.
Breys/Bergmen/Munro/MacKenzie: Response
She gestured back up towards where the others were.
Brexis: The batteries should be charging now. ::beat, then shouting:: The batteries should be charging now!
Breys/Bergmen/Munro/MacKenzie: Response
There were more scratching sounds against the deck plating. A growl emanated through her skull. She bent over, holding her head in her hands.
Brexis: ::Pained:: They are getting closer!
Breys/Bergmen/Munro/MacKenzie: Response
TAG/TBC!
