(( Bridge, Deck 1 – USS Artemis-A ))
The turbolift doors slid shut behind Meris as they stepped inside, eyes locked on the data PADD Tamio K’Wara had handed them earlier. The engineering requests from the engineering team aboard Deep Space 224 filled the small display, and Meris’ fingers flicked rapidly across it, adjusting, deleting, and rewriting their notes for the umpteenth time.
oO No... if I adjust the plasma manifold test order, Test 3 results will not corrupt Test 5. But that would require extending warm-up cycles... unless I split the sequence across multiple shifts. Oo
Computer: Please state your destination.
Meris: ::jumping:: Oh... Primary Sickbay.
During their morning shift on the bridge, they had received a communique reminding them to complete their onboarding physical before the Artemis left spacedock. Meris had scheduled the appointment for immediately after their bridge shift - a shift blessedly short due to the ongoing shore leave. But they were having trouble focusing on anything other than the data PADD from Lieutenant K'Wara. Lieutenant Vailani had wanted the J'naii pilot’s input. It was the first task they were completing for their new boss, and it was absolutely critical that they performed the task to their utmost.
Their attention was so fixed on the data that they hardly noticed when the lift hummed into motion.
(( Turbolift – USS Artemis-A ))
The floor indicator quietly pinged in the background. Meris was completely oblivious. Their attention was locked on the lines of text as they reworded their overall summary for the third time in the last hour.
oO The gravimetric sensor recalibration still bothers me. The DS224 engineers must be missing a key variable... Oo
The lift chimed and the doors parted.
(( Corridor – Deck 7, USS Artemis-A ))
Meris stepped into the corridor without looking up, sidestepping crew members by instinct as they moved toward Primary Sickbay. They had spent a great deal of time reviewing the deck layout of the Artemis while en route to Deep Space 224, and felt reasonably confident they could have navigated an empty Deck 7 while blindfolded. But of course, the deck was not empty, and occasionally they were jostled by crew members moving in the opposite direction.
Crewman 1: Excuse me...
Meris’ free hand traced the edges of the PADD as they scrolled back to Test 2, making another marginal note about environmental control isolation during diagnostics.
oO If I integrate that adjustment, we will see a 12.4% reduction in navigational sensor drift... Oo
Crewman 2: Hey, watch where you’re going!
(( Primary Sickbay, Deck 7 – USS Artemis-A ))
The doors parted with a soft hiss, and Meris entered, still staring at the PADD. They stopped just inside the threshold, the doors sliding shut behind them - then reopening as the motion sensor caught the J'naii still within range. The cycle repeated twice before Meris stepped to one side of the doorway and leaned absently against a wall. They didn't summon a doctor. They didn't flag down a nurse. They just stood there, fully engrossed in the task at hand.
oO This has to be perfect. Oo
Bancroft: Response.
Meris: ::absently, eyes on PADD:: I received a reminder to report for my onboarding physical. I am here to comply with that request.
The J'naii's fingers moved across the surface of the PADD, adjusting a small bit of language to be clearer for Lieutenant Vailani to read and understand.
Bancroft: Response.
Meris: This is merely a formality, yes? I am confident my physical condition is within operational parameters. Although... ::pauses to make a note:: my sleeping schedule may have shifted marginally since arriving aboard.
