oO Coffee shops on starships Oo
Ava always found the notion absurdly surreal and that's why she had grown fond of it. She was of the opinion that everyone needed some harmless absurdity in their life. It helped when they served delicious hot chocolate, with cream AND marshmallows.
Harper had dubbed it ‘mum's guilty pleasure’ but Ava felt no guilt in this particular pleasure. As she had finished up with her order and scanned the quaint seating area for a place to sit, she saw a raised arm and it was adjoined to a lovely Edo woman.
oO hot chocolate AND Jovenan Oo
This was turning out to be a great day.
Jovenan: Commander, if you’re not expecting to meet someone, would you like to join me?
Munro: I would like nothing more :: to the PADD :: I hope that's something wonderfully scandalous and not work.
When Jovenan gestured to the chair on the other side of a small table, Ava sidled into it and rested her own mug on the table.
Ava only smiled politely when she saw Jovenan hug a PADD tightly against her chest. Ever conscientious or at least it seemed that way to Ava.
Jovenan: I was just reading through some communiqués I have received, nothing important. ::looks at PADD, slightly puzzled:: Some Ferengi businesses seem to have started sending mass messages to everyone on the ship after we arrived here. Have you seen some of these?
Ava had indeed seen those same messages and heard the accompanying jingles that were a jumbled cacophony of hymns and trumpets that didn't quite sound right. She assumed these were supposed to be what she'd heard Earth folks call Christmas music. Her knowledge of the event was limited to what was contained within her Earth history lessons when she was a child. Some kind of capitalistic religious ceremony that centred around an elderly man in a red uniform.
When Jovenan turned her PADD around Ava almost lost the sip of hot chocolate she had just swallowed. There it was but instead of a bespectacled kindly old man there was a Ferengi, loves and teeth and all, wearing a red tailored suit and an awful lot of white fluff attached to their face.
Around him was a group of humans who were celebrating his appearance by throwing slips of gold-pressed latinum in the air. And apparently Jovenan wasn't complete as she scrolled down further to reveal more posts that all adhered to the theme aggressively. Red, green and white colours swirled by in post after post, candy canes flew around and small goblins carried sacks … that may or may not contain children.
“Celebrate Human End of Year Present Day with Bogg’s Clothing Emporium!”
“Alpha Isle’s Only Traditional Christmas (Or Equivalent Alternative) Market at Zak’s Megastore, only for limited time!”
“Your Offspring Will Be Sad If You Don’t Buy Them DaiMon Yanzo Action Figure With Powersuit In Three Different Colors And House, Batteries Included For An Extra Price!”
Munro: Got to hand it to good old fashioned Ferengi marketing, they know how to stick to a theme.
Jovenan: I think they’re targeting us with these specific kind of messages because of our large human crew compliment. Although, I don’t remember seeing this much… whatever this is when I was in the Academy in San Francisco. ::shrug:: Or maybe I didn’t pay enough attention, since I didn’t have anyone to give presents to back then.
Munro: I think it's more of a loose homage to a time before Earth's third world war in the 20th century, which if I'm remembering my school lessons :: points to PADD :: That's a pretty tame reimagining.
Jovenan: Response
Munro: I don't judge, I love to shop just like any warm blooded human. We're not that dissimilar from Ferengi's us humans.
Jovenan: Response
Ava’s face lit up as a delightful new idea had just crossed her mind.
Munro: Why don't we go down? I bet they have some bargains to spend our stipend of latinum? If we want to stick to the theme we can even buy some gifts for the crew? You must have someone you'd like to buy a gift for?
Jovenan: Response
