She watched Gavrin leveled his phaser carefully at the closest target with growing confidence.

Cole: When you're ready.

Tarsan: I just.. have to wait for it, right?

She watched as the Ensign controlled his breathing, timing it to the movement of the target. That was an interesting decision. The three subsequent shots all landed on the target with a pleased noise from Gavrin.

Cole: ::nodding with a slight smile:: Much better.

Tarsan: Thanks, Lieutenant. Couldn't do it without your guidance.

Maybe this was part of it too, not just doing the work well, but teaching someone else how to do it better.

Cole: ::still holding her slight smile, with a head tilt:: You’ve got a few more targets.

Gavrin took aim and fired again, landing the remainder of his shots. His grouping still needed work, but it was a clear improvement on before.

Cole: Much better, Ensign. Keep this level of improvement and I might see if I can poach you for security.

Tarsan: Oh, well.. I'm uh... pretty happy in Engineering, Lieutenant.

Cole: ::laughing:: I’m joking about snagging you for security, but I am serious you are showing improvement and that matters.

Tarsan: ::letting out a sigh of relief:: Well - improvement's still not good right? ::laughing wryly::

Cole: Improvement is the point. Skill comes with repetition. What matters is that you’re listening, adjusting, and not letting one bad shot decide the rest of the drill.

Natasha stepped up beside Gavrin, giving him a moment to breathe before she threw him into phase three. He’d earned at least that much.

Tarsan: I was always good at taking instruction... Do you run all the new crew through phaser drills?

Cole: Not usually. You’re the first new crewman I’ve put through myself.

Tarsan: ::smiling faintly:: I'm not complaining - just didn't realise I'd be needing to practice again quite so soon

Cole: Better to fix the foundations now than discover the cracks when someone’s shooting back.

Tarsan: Response

She gave him another second to breathe before nudging the difficulty higher. Confidence built too fast got sloppy. Confidence built right became useful.

Cole: All right. Last phase. This one’s less about accuracy and more about judgment. Anyone can hit a target on a clean range. I want to see what you do when the shot isn’t clean.

Tarsan: Response

Cole: Computer, Run Cole Phaser practice 1A.

In a ripple of holodeck light, the sterile target range gave way to a tight alien hallway lined with dark metal bulkheads, recessed doorways, and too many places for someone hostile to hide.

Natasha stepped back half a pace, letting him take in the new environment before she spoke again.

Cole: This time the targets will be firing back. Same rules as before: three solid hits neutralize each target, and there are three of them. But if you get tagged three times, the simulation ends. Cover will work for both you and them.

Her mouth twitched at one corner.

Cole: My professional advice? Don’t get shot.

Tarsan: Response
