(( Path Out of Town – Holodeck 1, Deck 2, USS Artemis-A ))
Munro: Exactly, a cave in :: cringes :: We may need some dynamite?
K'Wara: The mine may have some. As far as I know, ancient Humans used dynamite as an actual tool during excavations. Though... This mine is called Oak Island Mine. A cave-in may accidentally end up flooding the entire structure.
Jovenan: We should see what the mine is like, obviously, but if it’s indeed near the river, I’d be surprised if they didn’t have issues with water leaking in even without a cave-in. There’s a chance the criminals will drown.
Ava shook her head, that was far too violent than the Holodeck settings would allow for … or so she would hope.
Silveira: OK why don’t we worry about that when we reach there. We still need some things to make this work.
They rode quickly in order to get closer to the river. The water tumbled over exposed rocks with a deafening roar. Ava lifted her arm to shield her eyes from the sun so that she can scope out the other side.
K'Wara: What can I say, I'm a bleeding heart. Don't much relish the idea of drowning a couple of hundred pepole, even if they are criminals..
Jovenan: Yeah… We’ll have to see if we can do that safely before blowing up anything. At least so that the Lieutenant and his men can dig through the cave-in before the entire mine is filled with water.
Silveira: Maybe we won’t need to come to that… Let’s try and scare them away first.
Munro: Maybe we're over complicating it. We don't want to collapse the tunnels, just seal up the exit. They're on an island maybe we can stop them crossing, somehow?
The horses trodded along the side of the river, as they looked for a place to pass.
K'Wara: Sounds like a plan.
They were getting closer as the terrain changed.
Jovenan: I think we’re almost there. We should be careful that we don’t accidentally come across with their patrol or something.
Silveira: I know, let’s keep our eyes open.
Tamio took out a spyglass and scouted the area.
K'Wara: Damn. Lookouts. If they see us, they'll alert the entire mine. And I don't think there's a chance of us sneaking the horses over there without getting spotted.
Ava cursed under her breath.
Jovenan: Let’s hide the horses somewhere and figure out how to get closer without being noticed.
Silveira: Good idea.
K’Wara: Response
Ava followed along with Thunder, trying not to let him gallop too hard as they snuck in behind some small hills. She dismounted from Thunder and tied him up against a tree.
Jovenan: Wait. What’s that over there?
Ava turned and tried to see what Jovenan pointed towards. It was a bunch of crates.
Silveira: Let’s check it quickly.
Munro: Be careful! It might be dynamite.
As they got closer to the mines, Ava felt a little more hesitant about the approach. They had already done so much she didn't want them getting caught right as they were coming to the conclusion.
K’Wara: Response
Jovenan looked at them before stepping closer to one of the crates and opening it. A cloud of dust emerged.
Jovenan: This must have been the old miners’ campsite. Look at these! ::pulls out a moth-eaten shirt and a rusty pickaxe::
Ava scrunched up her face.
Silveira: If…
Silveira smiled and dismounted as well, quickly strapping the horse to a log as he pointed.
Silveira: I think we got lucky…
Or the Holodeck programme made it easy for them … but she didn't say so.
K’Wara: Response
Silveira moved towards what seemed like a thickened barrel from a distance but had been smeared in dirt and sand.
Silveira: This… This is it…
When Ava got closer she realised what it was. It was another entrance to the mine. Which meant that the mine went under the river.
Silveira: OK so I am betting this well or shaft connects with the mine. We can use it to scare them.
Munro: This is probably how they've been able to get across the river. We really should check out the island some more. Let's see if it's passable by horse. I'm going to bet a fair amount of these criminals can't swim. Come on Tambourine, you're with me.
K’Wara/Jovenan: Response
Silveira: Something that can sound from another world, anything metallic like a saw… ::he gestured with his hands as he looked around:: The most scary thing is our imagination, and if we make enough noise, from inside the mine….
Ava crept up the hill, she lowered her body into the tall grass and began to pull herself upwards. She could still hear Silveira talking, his voice thankfully was blocked by the rushing water from the river. She could see that the island was a spot of land that had a few spattering of oak trees on it, but the river forked around it. She imagined that at one point this piece of land was connected to the rest and some natural phenomena had caused a flood of water to surround the hill.
Silveira: Ava… You don’t happen to have some British blood on your veins, do you? I somehow feel you could scream like that mythological creature… A Banshee? Have you heard of it?
Ava laughed.
Munro: My Dad is Scottish. Does that count?
Silveira/K’Wara/Jovenan: Response
Ava strolled carefully reversed back down the hill to join the others.
Munro: We can't swim across that river. My guess is they use this shaft to travel through when the river swells up like it has.
Silveira/K’Wara/Jovenan: Response
She cocked her ear as voices emerged from inside the tunnel.
Munro: Dammit!
Ava got low to the ground and started to wail through one of the gaps in the wood. She urged the others to do the same. She then leapt to her feet and started to dance around, slamming her boots onto the wood and the ground as she hollered.
Banshee mode activated.
Silveira/K’Wara/Jovenan: Response
