((La’kso Canyon, Meranuge IV))

The shuttlepod glided across the air before taking a turn and softly landing on the rocky terrain. Four people exited: two humanoid men, a humanoid woman, and another humanoid woman, one that looked like a Vristoan lion had started walking on two feet and wear clothes. Not that the three other humanoids looked normal in any way: their skin was sort of beige and their hair different shades of brown or yellow. All of their clothes were bizarre and alien.

Rennol lowered his binoculars. He couldn’t see the shuttle with his naked eye from this far, but it was certainly there. He turned to his partner, who was still observing their visitors through the device.

Rennol: They’re Starfleeters, aren’t they?

Kireeh: Definitely. From the ship on the orbit.

Rennol raised the binoculars back to his eyes. The four humanoids were unloading the shuttle of seemingly full backpacks. He couldn’t see their faces clearly from this far, but they all seemed so young, not rugged old officers he had expected. One or two of them were holding their backs after getting out of the shuttle. The vessel wasn’t exactly a warship nor a fighter either. It didn’t even look larger than a standard Planet Hopper.

Rennol: Do you think it could be a coincidence?

The other person thought for a moment, frowning his eyebrows behind the binoculars. Then, he shook his head.

Kireeh: After the mess they caused in Tecra? No.

Rennol felt unsatisfied by the brief and unreasoned answer his partner had given him. The yellow-haired woman was looking at some sort of a scanning device but put it soon back to her belt before picking up one of the backpacks. The alien group was still chatting on the landing site. Rennol lowered his binoculars and properly turned towards Kireeh.

Rennol: What makes you think so? They don’t look like spies or marines. They look like… they look like kids on a field day to me.

Kireeh sighed and lowered his binoculars as well, facing Rennol.

Kireeh: They are space aliens, Rennol. You wouldn’t be able to differentiate a 14-year-old ka’hu bear from a 28-year-old one if you had never seen one before. Don’t assume they age like we do. For all we know, they might have decades of military experience.

He raised his binoculars back on to his eyes. They alien group was walking down a path to the lower parts of the canyon.

Kireeh: Besides, they are Starfleeter officers. Even if they were youngsters, they have gone through a long training. A private is as dangerous as a general, if not more so. There are no coincidences. Trained soldiers don’t come to a place like this just for a field trip.

The alien group disappeared behind a rocky cliff. The two Da’al both put their binoculars aside.

Rennol: So, what do you suggest we do to them? Remove them?

Kireeh rubbed his chin. He shook his head.

Kireeh: No, that would just bring more, looking for them. They don’t have a way to contact their ship while in the canyon. Maybe we should test your hypothesis. Let’s just observe for now. They might not find the site and just leave.

Rennol and Kireeh looked at each other and nodded silently. They packed their binoculars and left to look for a better place to look at the unaware visitors.
