MacKenzie: It’s good to know we’ve got an extra set of eyes watching our tail out there so we can focus on our problems here. Now, what’s the plan for clearing the decks?

Jovenan: Sir, the Luna class environmental systems are very diverse in order to allow a variety of species in the crew. While the main controls are on Deck 9, most decks and some sectors have their own environmental subprocessors to better manage local environment of the area. We – uh, somebody – could go and manually force those subprocessors to execute simple orders, such as to increase local air-pressure. That way we can create a tunnel of high and low pressure that will blow the gas to the desired direction.

Sadar: Given me and Lieutenant Jovenan’s skill sets, I’d suggest that either I go alone, or we go together. I need to go in order to handle the Naloxone deployment, as we still don’t know the exact composition of the gas employed. Depending on the results of my scans, I may need to adjust the dosage compared to standards.

Yalu: Response

The Captain seemed to consider their words for a few seconds.

MacKenzie: Well, it sounds like it’s up to us. What do you recommend?

It felt like the still surface of the water, barely contained in a vessel too small - threatening to spill - finally gave way to cascade, and Gila’s mind immediately started to work through the steps necessary for what was ahead.

Jovenan: Aye, sir. We would need to act fast. There might be dozens of unconscious crewmembers and civilians on those decks.

Sadar: Request permission to bring the Bridge’s emergency medkit along in case any trapped crewmen are in urgent need of treatment, Sir?

MacKenzie: I suppose you can, though it’s likely that anyone we’ll encounter will be unconscious and not an immediate priority.

Yalu: Response

Sadar: Yes sir.

Gila didn’t argue - she’d still been given permission - and a medikit would be invaluable if the gas turned out to be more dangerous than anticipated, or if they located any children stuck on the gassed decks.

She immediately moved to the small compartment by the Tactical Console where the Bridge emergency medikit was stored. Meanwhile, the Captain went for her phaser. Gila focused intently on the weightlessness of the medikit, and the effort needed to keep it from floating away from her. It almost made her forget the feeling of the phaser she still had at her side.

Almost.

MacKenzie: ::pointing:: Last one into the Jefferies’ Tube is a rotten egg…

The Captain’s attempt at humor made Gila pause for a moment. It was almost like a feeling of whiplash, but she powered through - not wanting the Captain to note her surprise - as Gila climbed into the Jefferies' Tube after Jovenan. The Captain and the First Officer followed.

The descent took quite a while and more than once Gila dreamt herself away to her workspace down in the Medical Labs. She wondered how her Lorillian Swamp Fungi were handling their reproduction cycle in an artificial environment. She hoped this whole debacle was solved in time for her to proceed with her research in a timely manner.

There was a brief pause in her step as she considered the possibility that the gas had gotten into the laboratory where their containment units were. If she had been cursed with a lacking prefrontal cortex like many other species, her blood pressure would surely be skyrocketing. Instead, she just sighed.

They descended for a good while as Gila struggled against the strength of the anti-grav boots and the weightlessness of the medikit bouncing along with her. The Captain was the first to speak.

MacKenzie: ::calling down:: Are you sure you’re going the right way, Lieutenant?

Jovenan: Response

MacKenzie: Doctor Sadar, where is the optimal point to deploy the gas?

Sadar: Deck 13. ::grunting as she climbs:: Once the gas has been rerouted into a localized area, I need to programme the injection of Naloxone directly from the life support systems. But I need to get an accurate analysis of the gas before we start rerouting it. ::deep breath:: We still don’t know the purity or composition of it, and I might need to make some final adjustment to the counter agent to ensure its viability. I should be able to get that from one of the environmental sub processors on the afflicted decks.

MacKenzie: And Jovenan, you can interface with the environmental systems from your tricorder?

Jovenan: Response

There was a brief pause, followed by another question from the Captain, this one aimed up at her First Officer.

MacKenzie: What did we even come for?

Yalu: Response

Gila blinked. What a curious question. They came along to ensure that the work was done. She then realized she’d fallen back to old habits, and almost grew annoyed with herself.

Starfleet didn’t operate on meticulous oversight. Gila remembered the first time she’d been left to her own devices. It was during her clinical rotations, and her medical supervisor had his own patient to care for. That was the first time she’d ever been given a job and just… Left to it. She had never been so terrified in her life. The idea of being trusted to do what was needed without supervision was almost as alien to her as any of the Federation species she’d worked with, and she had yet to feel accustomed to it.

The group continued their steady descent down into the ship, until they arrived at Deck 5, and the first of many subprocessors Lieutenant Jovenan would need to interface with while the plan was in motion.

Sadar: Excuse me, Lieutenant.

Attempting to make herself as small as possible - or as small as was possible for a 1.82 woman in an enclosed space - she climbed towards the Lieutenant and the subprocessor, interfacing her tricorder with the ship’s systems. As she read the results shimmering into life on the interface, the ridges on her brow quivered in frustration.

Sadar: This gas isn’t the Anesthezine stock we have onboard. It’s a combination of a number of different gasses - some anesthetic, some sedative and something with an hallucinogenic property. The standard Naloxone deployment won’t be enough - I need to make a mixture.

Jovenan/Yalu/MacKenzie: Responses

Backing away to let the Lieutenant do her job, Gila worked with the gas analysis for a few more seconds. This was a cocktail all right… A few of the gasses involved could be counteracted with Naloxone, but the dosages varied, and a few of the elements within needed other countermeasures on top of the Naloxone.

Sadar: ::Muttering to herself:: Anesthezine, Neurozine, Relorazine, Felicium, Theragen… ::To the Captain:: Captain, this gas is very dangerous. I need access to a computer to get precise measurements for the counteragent mixture. The Felicium in particular worried her, but she knew their Sickbay - under normal circumstances - was well-equipped to deal with it. Under these conditions though? She only hoped the medical replicators were functional, or those trapped crewmen were in for a rough couple of days...

Provided they all survived this whole ordeal, of course.

MacKenzie/Yalu: Response

Sadar: I can use the main Sickbay’s computer on Deck 7. We need to prepare Sickbay so they don’t attempt to interfere with the gas redirection regardless, so I can head there, warn them, use the computers to make my calculations and rejoin you then.

MacKenzie/Yalu: Response
