Hat vendor: Good afternoon, ladies. Are you perhaps looking for a present to a friend?

Jovenan glanced at Commander Munro, who just smiled in return. She couldn’t see how the vendor knew that they were after a present; either the two officers looked like tourists who had come for the Christmas market specifically – which was true – or that neither of them looked like people who wore a hat – which, at least on Jovenan’s behalf, was also true. Either way, it hastened the interaction as they didn’t need to explain themselves.

Jovenan: Yes, yes we are!

Hat vendor: Splendid. What type of headwear are you looking for?

Munro: :: definite :: I want a top hat.

The Commander had already made their decision, it seemed. As they had talked, buying a top hat for the Captain was fitting and fun. Looking through the rest of the selection, she imagined Captain MacKenzie as one of the people in such hats: there she was standing in front of the roll of enormous steel chain in that photo from the Earth’s history book, and there with a beard in the presentation of Starfleet’s past events. Wasn’t there also a type of eyewear associated with that hat? She tilted her head looking at another curious hat.

Jovenan: I like the idea of a top hat. She also likes racing, but I don’t know if there are hats associated in that sports… ::points at cowboy hat:: What’s this?

Munro: You've never done a Western Holodeck Programme? :: tuts :: That's a cowboy hat. Commander Jovenan we need to remedy this at the first opportunity :: shakes head :: I thought it was a rite of passage for every Starfleet officer to do a Western Holo.

Jovenan didn’t know how embarrassed she was supposed to be that she didn’t know what the human officer was talking about. She made it sound like it was a part of every Starfleet officer’s basic knowledge, but in Jovenan’s defence, she had only taken one short course in human history nine years ago in the University, and there had been just so much to learn.

Jovenan: There must be a gap in my erudition into such activities, by the sound of it. Would- would you remind me what exactly is “western”?

Munro: It's 19th century Earth. The historical contexts are important but most programmes aren't supposed to be taken seriously: they have wagon trains, horses, gun fights, cowboys that wear those hats :: points :: and they ride horses and do exciting fun stuff. It's a lot of fun :: looks at Jovenan :: There are more serious ones that are more about the learning of that time period. It was, apparently, a very brutal time in Earth's history overall. :: shrugs :: Hence why I've only done the fun one. My Holodeck time is for kicking back and shooting some train robbers.

Oh. If it weren’t for the disclaimer that their historicity weren’t to be taken seriously, Jovenan would have questioned the morality of the holoprogrammes. After all, she had trouble identifying what exactly made them fun from the explanation alone. Danger? Crime? As much as she liked the idea of executing criminals, she had learnt from experience that killing people wasn’t all that fun. However, she supposed it was something one needed to see for themselves before making the judgment. In the end, it sounded a lot like something Vitor would have liked.

Jovenan: I see. I’ll have to try it out.

Munro: :: to the vendor :: I'll take a cowboy hat. That black one, with the feathers :: mischief :: We can schedule some time on the Holodeck, if you'd like? I'll even do the historical one but only if you'll do the fun one with me? Not historically accurate at all and ridiculous but you'll have so much fun. And you get to ride a horse - who doesn't love riding horses?

Again, something she’d have to try out first before judging. The Commander’s enthusiasm made her want to try it out. Perhaps she would learn that she actually liked all those sorts of things – not everything needed to be serious. And the more she learnt, the more certain she was that Vitor would have loved taking part in it as well. The non-serious, borderline ridiculous historical action was really his type, from what she could guess. And he already had that toga, another piece of clothing from human history, even if she hadn’t actually ever seen it on him.

Jovenan: You’ve convinced me. ::to the vendor:: I’ll take two cowboy hats. ::to Munro:: I bet Vitor will like a hat like that, too. But you’ll have to teach me all the basic tricks first before I’ll get him to join me to the holodeck.

Munro: Response

Jovenan: Sounds fun. ::to the vendor:: I’ll have similar hats too, please. That dark brown one, and the, um, beige one?

The hat she had chosen for first, the one coloured chocolate, had a leather band around the crown with a steel or iron buckle in the front, while the other was much paler, almost white, and had a darker leather twine band around it. There was also another, pink one with pink fur around it, but that didn’t seem to fit any of theirs aesthetics – there were a few other crewmembers she could see wearing one, though.

Hat vendor: Fine choices. I can see that you both have an eye for quality products. Would you like something else?

Munro: Response

Jovenan paid her purchase. She realised only afterwards that she should have probably haggled a little, but the tales of the adventures and the chance to explore them with someone – or someones – who were interested or even passionate was making her overtly excited. She juggled for a moment with her shopping bags and the cup that had only a little bit of mulled wine in the bottom remaining, while she waited for Commander Munro to finish her purchase.

((OOC: Feel free to add conversation with the vendor if you want.))

Once they had bought the hats, they stepped away from the stall, and Jovenan looked at the Commander.

Jovenan: So… westerns, cowboys and train robbers? Would you happen to have any other interests? I might need to buy a present for one more person, after all. ::smirk::

Munro: Response
