to USS Artemis-A – StarBase 118 Star Trek PBEM RPG
((Outside Transport Hub, Eastern Ice Shelf, Andoria))
Vitor admittedly thought things could have gotten worse. And even if H’aal had been helpful, there was a slight moment the better thing he could have done was shutting up.
But, admittedly things had gone much smoother than expected. And Vitor, carrying the bag that Kona had collected, took to Kona’s side and gestured for Sambur to step close as well.
Silveira: I am sorry it has reached this point, but thank you Kona. ::Turning to Sambur:: I want registered that Mr. Antares was cooperative.
Antares: ::distractedly:: Thank you.
Sambur: Aye, Commander.
Sambur typed something in his PADD and Vitor could see Alex picking up Cassie.
Storm: Keep your face pressed into my coat to keep you warm, okay?
As they started to get down the stairs Vitor was a bit behind, closing the group.
He slowly got the hood up, still watching Kona.
Silveira: For what it’s worth, I know how hard it is to be far from your child…
Alex glanced from Sil to Kona.
Storm: So do I.
Vitor was ready to help but Kona lifted one palm, declining the assistance without looking back.
Storm: Jira, can you guide us back to the transport hub? My arms are full of precious cargo.
Cassie: I’m not cargo, Mommy!
H’aal giggled hearing those words from the little kitten.
H’aal: ::whispers for himself:: Enjoy your mama, little one. You will never know when you will miss it…
Jaran: I've got you covered, Alex.
They got to the bottom of the stairs without any further incident.
Alex held Cassie closer to her.
Storm: Cassie, we’re heading outside now. Remember what I said about your face, okay?
Cassie: Mmmhmm
H'aal stepped out first as Vitor covered the rear.
Jaran: You both keep warm. Don't make me have to be your mother, Ms. Storm. I've heard
Silveira; OK everyone let’s get ready.
With Kona between him and Sambur they stepped out.
Storm: We shouldn’t be outside for more than five or ten minutes, Munchkin.
Antares: Where will she sleep?
Jaran: The ship is well equipped for civilians of all ages.
With his new responsibilities as Security chief Vitor felt he should add that extra responsibility to his conscience.
Silveira: Cassie will be in good hands.
Antares: Please, no.
He stopped. The group bunched to a halt around him. Vitor closed his eyes guessing what would come next.
Antares: She can’t go aboard that ship. Please.
Kona looked toward Cassie. Alexandra held her tightly.
Antares: A starship is not a home for a child. Alexandra, she’s four. She cannot consent to living beside an… an antimatter reactor.
Vitor held his hand, but said nothing.
What could he say?
After all… That was exactly why Jonathan didn’t visit him, why he left his own son in the care of his mother, Thera. And ironically, exactly there, in Andoria.
Antares: Wolf 359. Sector 001. The Dominion War. Frontier Day. ::sharply:: No– listen to me! On and on and on. And after every one, Starfleet holds a memorial. It reads the names. It promises lessons were learned.
Kona’s eyes moved wildly between them.
Antares: ::quietly:: Then it builds another ship. ::bitterly:: Another hull. Another crew willing to be sucked into space while they sleep. Another group of people who trusted that the shields would always hold.
Vitor looked up. As the senior officer present he should have said something.
As a Lieutenant Commander and department head he should have argued.
As a friend he should have retorted and replied.
As a father he couldn’t contest Kona’s words.
Antares: And when those shields fail, you hold another service. You place another plaque on another wall and call the loss the price of exploration. ::pointing at Cassie:: She will not become another name on one of your walls!
He looked at Cassie and Vitor swallowed the lump that had formed in his throat.
Then Kona moved. Vitor was too stunned to react and Sambur was the one that actually did something, trying to catch Kona
Storm: Sil!? What’s going on?
Sambur: He’s trying to run! Keep behind me!
Jaran: Oh you foolish man...
Silveira: Kona don’t…
Somehow Kona managed to get himself out of and rushed to the embankment, half jumped and half fell over it, then vanished into the driving storm.
Sambur: Kona! Watch out!
H’aal: Silveira? Doctor? Alex? What’s happening?
Sambur was again the only one to fully react to the situation.
Sambur: =/\= This is Lt. Sambur of the USS Artemis on an emergency hail! We have a civilian lost over the embankment at my position! Betazoid male! Name, Kona Antares! He’s not wearing any communicative gear that I’m aware of! And he doesn’t have any coat or gloves! Repeat, no coat no gloves! We need aid at all speed to this position! =/\=
Andorian Operator: =/\= Acknowledged, Lieutenant. Your location has been logged and a Search And Rescue team alerted. We’ll take it from here. Clear the area. Get to secure ground or housing. Do not attempt to involve yourself in the search effort. Our people know their work. Any assistive efforts on your part can only slow them down. =/\=
Sambur: =/\= Understood. Thank you for your efforts. Sambur out. =/\=
Jira took out their tricorder, and Vitor was still frozen. As if the cold Andorian weather had glued him in his spot.
Storm/H’all: response
Sambur tossed something from his satchel as Vitor shook his head. His eyes were starting to burn and not because of the cold.
Jaran: There's nothing we can do here. We need to get the little one back inside somewhere, though.
Gaining some self control he raised his voice.
Silveira: C’mon, we are leaving.
Storm/ H’all: response
Vitor forced himself to move.
Jaran: Alex, are you ready to go finish this and get Cassie home?
Storm/ H’all: response
Vitor kept quiet and saw Jira pulling something out and offer it to Cassie.
Jaran: ::offering the toy:: Cassie, would you like to hold this? You can keep it if you want.
Cassie: Response?
Vitor kept moving. He was numb and again not because of the cold.
Storm/ H’all: Response
Jaran: It was made my job to guide us back, and I'm going to follow through. This way, everyone.
Vito nodded and stepped up.
Silveira: That’s it Doc, lead us home.
Storm/ H’all: Response
That wasn’t exactly true, now that they got Cassie the others could return.
As for him…
He was going back to give his son a hug.
A strong one. And to say goodbye.
Because he knew that Kona wasn’t wrong.
And Vitor also knew Kona wasn’t right either. That was also why he would return to the Artemis.
Back home.
