((Primary Sickbay – Deck 7, USS Artemis-A))
Gila really wasn’t supposed to be in Sickbay. She’d applied for a temporary reassignment to go bolster Earth’s crisis response efforts for a reason - multiple, really, if you counted her own persisting doubts about her usefulness aboard the Artemis - and thus, she’d only really come back on board because the supervising officer on the ground had forced her to take leave. Imagine that, enforced leave from volunteer work. The very notion that the quality of Gila’s work would deteriorate with a lack of sleep was - frankly - disconcerting, as Gila thought herself an expert at functioning on a bare minimum of both sleep and nourishment, but she was also the first to say ‘Yes Sir’ and jump off of a bridge, so... Back to the Artemis she went.
And right back into work that had been left by the wayside in her absence.
There was an obscene number of unaddressed issues in Sickbay, with most of them being the administrative tasks that had somehow become Gila’s purview, because she was seemingly the only one to give them any sort of importance. In the wake of Frontier Day’s devastating effect on crew morale, the most pressing administrative task that hadn’t been addressed was the countless house calls required to urge the crew to make it to their counseling appointments on time. This was why Gila’s ‘enforced leave’ from crisis response on Earth was spent in Sickbay pouring over PADDs upon PADDs of belatedly logged shoreleave plans, unanswered reminders forwarded from the counseling department and frankly irrelevant notifications of a new dating service, which had just launched an advisory service, which would bring StarFlirt to the ‘Flirters’.
What was that even doing on this PADD? She needed to have a serious chat with Nurse Jorgenson about this.
oO Ensign Fawe has requested temporary leave to go see in-laws on Luna, so I can delay her mandatory counselor appointment slightly, but Crewman Tri’Roch almost snapped the head off of Warrant Officer Gelk in Elysium today, so theirs should probably be moved up... Petty Officer Brell missed her session, so someone should probably go round her up, and Crewman Howe- Oo
MacKenzie: Doctor Sadar.
Gila nearly dropped the two PADDs she held at the alarming sound from behind her, and she whirled around, eagerly standing to attention, while also sending another few PADDs skitting to the ground. Quite naturally, her fingers dropped to the obsidian band, twisting resumed.
Sadar: C-Captain! What brings you here? ::clumsily picks up PADDs:: Uhh, Commander Adea isn’t in currently? ::widens eyes:: O-Or did you make an appointment? I-I’m so sorry, I’ll fetch-
oO Surprise inspections!? NOW? Have a heart, Captain! Oo
Captain MacKenzie’s response, however, was confusing and alarming in equal measures, as she raised her hands in a calming gesture.
MacKenzie: I’m not here for any other reason than to see how you are.
Gila froze. Deer in headlights-scenario.
Sadar: How... I am, Sir?
Captain MacKenzie’s face seemed to twist and shift, and for a moment, Gila feared that maybe they hadn’t located all the Changeling infiltrators, but eventually - when death did not impact her - she had to reconcile the notion that this was just Captain MacKenzie looking marginally less intimidating than usual...
MacKenzie: Well, I read what happened on the Kitty Hawk…
There was an abrupt and immediate shift in Gila’s body language as the Captain voiced this otherwise innocent phrase.
oO Read what? About what!? What part of it!? The Borgings tossed a transporter chief at my head? The CMO of the Kitty Hawk developing a Borg allergy!? The Kitty Hawk crew’s idea of a distraction being a Bridge filled with silly string? Or- Oo
Bone meal and iron spread in her mouth as the memory relapsed horribly before Gila’s inner eye, and she immediately started gnawing at the inside of her cheek - the raw and purple flesh evidence of her latest obsessive habit - as she tried to regain calm.
Sadar: Wh-Wh-Wh... ::forced deep breaths:: Uhh... I-I... It was a... It was rough, Sir. As I’m sure it was for everyone... B-But all things considered, I, uhh... I-I’m handling it as best I can.
Not a lie. Just not necessarily a vote of confidence either.
MacKenzie: Response
Gila smiled palely, nodding dutifully in response to the Captain’s warning.
Sadar: D-Don’t worry, Sir. This is a counseling appointment I won’t run from... ::brief pause: As soon as I’m done with work.
MacKenzie: Response
Sadar: Oh, uhh, no Sir... I’m assisting crisis response efforts on Earth, and I want to make sure that we’ve reached a point of ‘treading water’ before I come back on board full-time. ::looks at the PADDs:: This is, uhh...
MacKenzie: Response
