(( Holodeck 3 – Deck 3, USS Artemis-A ))

The first drill, short and simple, went by quickly. If anything, it felt more like a warmup than anything serious, probably as with the difference from the Kobali files and criterion for passing, they needed to start from the very beginning to properly judge her skills. They took a few deep breaths, before focusing in as the holographic targets flashed in and out of sight.

It wasn’t perfect, far from it, but to Vhysa’lia, it was at least serviceable. Mostly hits, rather than misses, thankfully. Even with the different grip, and slightly different response, the muscle memory still held. Whether or not any of that muscle memory was from her kyn’steya, she had no idea. But it wasn’t too far-fetched, even if a bit distasteful.

Vhysa’lia: So, is that enough to graduate me out of “useless” on an away team?

Storm: I definitely wouldn’t term you useless.  You’ve got a good grasp - literally - of the weapon.

With that praise, Vhysa’lia took a slight bow, smile widening just a fraction.

Vhysalia: Why, thank you, Lieutenant.

Storm:  On the basic level, you scored a ninety percent which is nothing to sniff at.  It’s a great jumping off point for a couple of other short simulations before we get on to the test itself.

Lt. Storm scrolled through some details on her PADD, and Vhysa’lia waited patiently to see what was up next for her. 90% was better than expected, perhaps their skills hadn’t degraded as much as they had thought in the time since their last training.

Vhysalia: I’m no Vulcan, obviously, but ninety percent still leaves ten percent shy of perfect. Before we get to the other simulations, was there anything that stood out?

It was a little inside joke with herself, that Vulcan comment. In the immediate few days following their meeting with Lt. Cmdr. Munro, Vhysa’lia had been deeply on edge because of the information that they’d heard from her. But now, with more time in between, she found that she could joke about it, a little. They weren’t a Vulcan, that was certain.

Storm:  So while I was watching the last exercise, I noticed a few simple things I can teach you to improve even on an easy exercise like the one you just finished, if you’re interested in learning.

Vyhsa’lia: Oh, of course. Whatever you have to teach, I’m here to learn.

With a bit of jest, she gave another small bow of her head to Lt. Storm.

Storm: Response

The advice was interesting, and made a good deal of sense. It wasn’t too difficult to follow, and Vhysa’lia tried to put it into practice.

Vhysa’lia: That makes sense, so… ::adjusting their stance and grip:: like this?

Storm: Response

With the additional help and adjustment from Lt. Storm, Vhysa’lia felt ready to take on another simulation, and hopefully get one step closer to checking this Phaser Certification off her list.

Vhysa’lia: I think I’m ready for another simulation, unless you’ve got any more advice?

Storm: Response
