((Underground facility, Kurtûl III))

A catastrophic chain of events had strung themselves into a bright red tricorder warning of approaching thalaron radiation. Havun was after something incredibly important, there wasn’t any other reason to risk everything. Whatever was going on behind the door was about to kill them all.

Breys: The thalaron particles are being vented into tanks a kilometer below us, and one is leaking. We need to get in now and turn this off!

The computer chimed in, confirming a portion of her assessment.

COMPUTER: Thalaron treatment commenced in Research Lab 1. All unnecessary medical personnel, evacuate disposal tanks.

Jovenan: Ensign, swap with me. Lieutenant!

Storm:  Commander?

D’tin wasn’t so sure about this plan either, but she had been chased by dogs during her last phaser training. That was applicable here, right?

Breys: Okay, sir.

It wasn’t meant to come out like that.

She rapidly swapped with the tactical officer and held up her phaser, attempting not to shake. Breys couldn’t help but ensure it was on its minimum setting one last time before aiming it completely down the hallway, two shots whizzed nearly around the corner as she did. They were approaching.

Jovenan: Try to get it open, use of force authorised.

Behind the Ensign, Jovenan began to attempt to reason with Havun. She trained her phaser downrange and put several phaser shots entirely wide, at least she made the shadowy figure duck.

Jovenan: Mister Havun! This is Starfleet! You’re under arrest. Shut down the generator and call off your troops, and you’ll receive a fair trial.

Storm: It’s using a biometric triple locking mechanism.

Two shots flew by D’tin’s head, close enough that she felt the heat almost scald her cheek. She was almost certain she lost a lock of her hair, the cost of having such a poofy style.

Storm: But lucky for us - like most everything around here, it’s an older iteration of it, and has a weakness I think we can exploit.

A breath. An exhale. Hold.

Ikaixar: I’m recalibrating my phaser, it’ll be faster if there’s more of us trying to blast it open.

D’tin fired. The shot connected, and the last remaining member of the hostile force.

Stayed standing?

She thought back to her phaser training courses, and to stun levels. Maybe the minimum setting had been overly cautious considering the circumstances.

Breys: ::to herself:: Oh no.

It took a certain amount of nerves to land a shot on a hostile force, to turn up her phaser setting and do it again? That felt impossible to D’tin.

Jovenan: Havun! Open the door or we’ll blow it up! Or let the Nascaik do it for us!

Several shots arced past Breys, she wasn’t sure if the next callout was caused by them or not.

Ikaixar: Commander, duck!

She aimed down range again, as raging phaser fire blared behind her.

Storm: Wait!

Through the shrieks of the phasers there was a tap on D’tin’s shoulder. She could have lost her head for it, considering how high she jumped when it startled her. Thankfully, her opponent was behind their cover at the time.

Breys: You could have killed me there!

Storm gestured for the Ensign to return to the main group, while the tactical officer finished off the last of the trouble. Breys scurried back to the pack, thankful that she didn’t have to continue the firefight.

Ikaixar: I’ll need someone to tell me when to stop— I can’t see how thick the metal is.

Crawling further away from the door, Jovenan was afraid to stand up in case she accidentally put herself into the line of fire. In the background, Lt Storm was coming to help Ensign Breys with the fight against the remaining opponent in the corridor.

Storm: Got him! We’re clear for now. I’m going to gather their phasers.

Jovenan: Ensign, can you tell if the Doctor’s phaser fire is penetrating the door?

Breys: Yes, sir.

Jovenan nodded. D’tin set her tricorder to alert when there was 2mm of material left, with the shut off time of the phaser, that should have allowed them a thin enough layer to snap it like a twig.

Ikaixar: How-how many are going to be waiting for us on the other side?

Storm: Lieutenant, they are using Thaleron radiation in there.

Jovenan: Can you get a definitive answer?

Jovenan looked to D’tin, the designated tricorder wielder of the group.

Breys: Yes, sir. There the radiation in the room is fairly contained so I can filter it out effectively. There are two lifesigns in the room, both Da’al.

Ikaixar: Let me worry about us dropping, just keep giving cover!

The cut was almost through, she heard a voice through the walls.

Havun: Computer, isolate the necrotic nucleotides in the patient. What’s the recommended treatment?

COMPUTER: Analyzing. Nucleomimetic hyper-treatment plan loading. Warning: Patient’s DNA porosity not at recommended levels.

Havun: Load up the instructions... The treatment will start soon.

D’tin’s tricorder alert began to go off,

Storm: ::To Ikaixar:: Stop! You’re through!

oO I guess I won’t be following that order then. Oo

Jovenan: Starfleet! Hands up!

Breys began an immediate sweep of the room with her tricorder, staying behind the frame of the door with all but her eyes and her scanner. There was one man with no weapon, and a woman in a medical bed. Appearing as a threat felt like a potentially incorrect decision.

Ikaixar: Response

Havun: Start the treatment. ::raises the glass hammer to the chamber’s window and looks at

Starfleet:: Step any closer, I’ll break the glass and release the radiation to the rest of the laboratory.

Breys watched as Havun seemed genuinely ready to put the entire compound at risk of death. Whoever this woman was, she was incredibly important to him. Storm placed her weapon away and slowly walked into the room with her hands up.

Storm: If you do that, you’ll kill yourself, too.

Jovenan: ::to her team, gently:: No sudden movements.

D’tin’s eyes were focused on the other Da’al, sickly, dying. Was this the reason for all of this?

Breys: Is she sick? We have a doctor with us. Sworn to do no harm, right? ::she looks nervously at Ikaixar:: If you put that down, could she look at the medical treatment?

Ikaixar: Response

Havun: Please understand, the treatment must continue. She- Falon will die without it!

That wasn’t an answer, that was just fear.

Jovenan: Falon. That’s your wife, isn’t she?

Everything was beginning to make sense.

Ikaixar/Havun: Response

Storm: Havun, do you realize that you have several Nascaik teams on the ground ready to take you out? We just stopped one of them. But there are more.

D’tin was fairly certain that was a bluff, but she hadn’t seen the other team closely.

Jovenan: But it doesn’t have to be that way. We can talk this through.

Breys: This doesn’t have to end badly. ::she looks to Falon:: For anyone.

Ikaixar/Havun: Response

Storm: And do you realize that they have threatened to execute Secretary Jetripar if we don’t bring you in? I can’t imagine you want that.

Based on previous conversations with Jetripar, D’tin felt it was likely this was an additional incentive for Havun to act brashly.

Jovenan: With us, that wouldn’t be the danger for him, or for you and your friends. And we might be able to help you. Do you know Starfleet colours? Look at us. Most of us are scientists and medicals. Surely we can come up with something.

Breys: We can fix this, we can go home safe.

Ikaixar/Havun: Response

Then, Storm lunged at Havun, attempting to wrestle the tool out of his hand.

Storm: I don’t want to hurt you!

She could have fooled D’tin.

Jovenan: ::fuming:: Lieutenant, what is Doctor, go help her!

Ikaixar/Havun/Storm: Response

Jovenan pivoted to Breys, preparing to give instructions.

Jovenan: Ensign, be ready to

Crash.

Klaxons blared across the entire section of the compound as warning lights glared red. The entire area was engulfed in their hue as the computer began to trail on about various critical levels of radiation in different areas of Research Lab 1. On her tricorder D’tin could see the lab filling with various radiation patterns, beginning to coat the room, but before they could spread, a forcefield flashed into place directly in front of her face. She yanked the tricorder back so as to not have it damaged.

An array of forcefields erected themselves in an almost artistic pattern, reminding her of a form she saw on her outing the Lt. Commander K’Wara, Their function was much more utilitarian, minimize radiation exposure between personnel in the room.

Jovenan: Lieutenant! Doctor!

Breys: I’ll try to find out which pockets the thalaron particles are isolated in.

oO What was it that Humans said about "Best laid plans"? Oo

Ikaixar/Havun/Storm: Response

Beside her, Jovenan also pulled out her tricorder. This was a problem tailor fit for two science officers. She just hoped they could figure it out.

Jovenan: It’s not fully potent thalaron radiation, otherwise you would be dead already. Are you alright? Havun, what is this?

The tricorder readings were incredibly strange, it was as if the particles were only barely there.

Breys: I’m seeing the same thing, how would you even cut it down like this?

Ikaixar/Havun/Storm: Response

Contrasting the readings, D’tin was able to see that the prognosis was about as expected.

Breys: It seems like Doctor Ikaixar is safe for now, the other two are right next to the breach, even with the forcefield sealing it, they’re exposed with it already trapped in their field. ::To Havun:: Why would you do this?

Jovenan/Ikaixar/Havun/Storm: Response

Breys: What are you talking about? What does this have to do with The Great Impact? ::gestures to Falon:: What’s wrong with her?

Jovenan/Ikaixar/Havun/Storm: Response

It was a sickening story to hear, but unfortunately it didn’t change their need to save as many lives as possible.

Breys: We still need to get you all out, there has to be a way to mitigate the radiation.

Jovenan/Ikaixar/Havun/Storm: Response

Suddenly an idea hit D’tin like a lead weight.

Breys: The other team! They were exposed to larger amounts of radiation, maybe they had an inoculant on them. If we can enter safely, we can disable the forcefields and inoculate Havun and Storm as well.

Jovenan/Ikaixar/Havun/Storm: Response
