(( Bridge - Deck 1, USS Artemis ))
There was a lot to be said about how the Ensign was willing to speak up in front of a Fleet Captain. Most of it was about how little forethought she had. This was obviously a dangerous conversation and Mackenzie seemed intent to pick Breys’s reasoning apart. She could just hope that she didn’t make a complete fool of herself.
Breys: I’m not exactly sure what the Federation wants us to be doing out here officially, but I know that when I've heard stories of the crews of Starfleet ships, including stories of the Artemis, they were stories of compassion. The idea of a place where everyone strived to make the world around them better was something I couldn’t let go of. I had to be a part of it.
There was, of course, only one portion of the answer that the commanding officer could or would fixate on, like a viper focused on its prey: the one subject that she knew better than anyone else.
MacKenzie: Stories of the Artemis? What stories have you heard?
Breys: Well sir, I was in the academy when the Artemis was recommissioned. I remember there being buzz about a ship being deployed in the Borderlands. I know a lot of the ship’s history is getting into dangerous situations, and that that is par for the course for being stationed out here. The stories about the Boraxian Yarum and Meranuge IV were what made me believe this is a great ship though. Little details work their way out, like the lengths you went to to help the Da’al clean up their atmosphere while being chased by mobs.
MacKenzie: And how does it make you feel to know that you've been assigned to be a part of that?
This felt like a loaded question.
Breys: I’m excited, sir.
oO And a little scared Oo
Breys was smart enough to not say that part out loud.
MacKenzie clasped her hands and let them come to rest in her lap.
MacKenzie: We'll see if you still feel that way when you're faced with the tough calls we encounter here.
All of the energy left Breys’s body. What a suffocating thing to hear from such a high ranking officer. She almost slacked her posture, but she managed to redouble her resolve. She spoke flatter than usual. It gave away her feelings more than she would have liked.
Breys: Yes sir. We'll see sir.
The answer in Breys's mind was clear. This was where she was meant to be. It felt like saying that out loud would only make her seem overconfident or defiant.
Mackenzie: Response
Breys: I’m going to work as hard as I can to prove I earned my place here, sir.
Mackenzie: Response
At this point Breys had successfully prevented every variation of fight, flight, and freeze.
Breys: Do you have any further questions for me, sir?
Mackenzie: Response
((OOC: I hope I did a reasonable job timing events that Breys might have heard about, and would be allowed to hear about. Thank you wiki gremlins for your aid.))
