(( Ens. Chevalier and Ens. Gnai's Quarters - Deck 5, USS Artemis-A ))

It happened one unassuming morning on shore leave, as Gnai was starting its day in the quarters that it shared. A message, sent to its PADD, requesting that it come meet with the captain in her ready room. It had been meaning to go meet with her, at some point, but the hubbub and chaos of everything it had needed to do to get situated on the ship as well as trying to come down from the stress of the mission had meant that making a meeting with her had slipped its mind.

This would be good though, one thing to cross off the eternal to-do list that all new ensigns seemed to get handed with their orders. And it had been meaning to try and patch up what she likely thought of it from the mission. Meeting under the stress of prison was not what it considered a good, useful first impression.

No time like the present, though! After quickly finishing its meal (once again, the easily replicable fish eggs that humans had already programmed into the replicators on the ship), Gnai made its way to the ready room.

(( Captain’s Ready Room – Deck 1, USS Artemis-A ))

Its nerves caught up briefly as it stood outside the door. The roe still bobbed along inside its body, slightly visible through the translucent mass, and it now realized how unprofessional that might look. But it was already here, and it had an appointment to meet with her. Missing that would be an even worse look.

Gnai reached out and pressed the button, ringing the door chime to her office.

MacKenzie: Come in!

Gnai entered at her invitation, taking in the ready room as it did. The captain sat behind a grand desk, with another seat across it. Presumably, it would sit there as they talked, but it didn't want to assume. Instead, it stood nearby, slightly awkwardly waiting for the invitation to sit, if it would come.

MacKenzie: Ensign Gnai, thank you for coming. ::gesturing:: Would you please have a seat?

Great! It had assumed correctly this time.

Gnai: Thank you, sir. ::sitting down:: And thank you for this meeting.

MacKenzie: I haven’t had the opportunity to officially welcome you aboard the Artemis. Somehow, being imprisoned together in a Betazoid penal colony doesn’t exactly scream “welcome...”

Gnai: No... it does not.

oO Nor does being stuck on Romulus and being part of an assassination. Oo

Not that it was very eager to mention that again. What good would that do? Gnai just bobbed along the top of its tank, lights trailing down its body and at times illuminating its meal inside its bell.

MacKenzie: But, I would say that the experience does seem to be indicative of how things go occasionally aboard this ship... I’m pleased to say that I thought you handled yourself very well despite it being a very trying time.

The lights shifted to a warm pattern of surprise. It had made a good impression?

Gnai: Thank you, sir! The mission was as you said... trying. And deeply unexpected.

To say the least. It really wasn't a fan of how everyone seemed quite convinced that such missions were the norm on the Artemis, rather than exceptions. Just exactly what it had signed up for when accepting this assignment, it had no clue anymore.

MacKenzie: So, Ensign, tell me about what prompted you to join Starfleet.

This was at least a much easier thing to talk about, compared to imprisonment. Gnai's bobbing grew slightly more pronounced as it started to speak, its tendrils flickering with the movement.

Gnai: Of course, sir. Starfleet offered a chance to explore, past just Galador II. There's so much out in the galaxy to see, and without a ship or resources to fund personal study, a Starfleet commission seemed necessary to get the chance to experience it all.

MacKenzie: Response

Gnai: This ::gestures to itself:: was always interested in the stars as a youth. There was another that had gone and explored with humanoids. That one came back to share the knowledge and be a mentor. ::another gesture to itself, this time, gesturing more to the suit it wore:: The suit was a collaboration with this mentor.

It was quite proud of that fact. Galadorans as a whole tended to be a bit fond of their species' prowess with robotic technologies.

MacKenzie: Response

Gnai: At the Academy, the focus was primarily on astrophysics. And some basics of engineering, for the suit. ::pause:: Is this what you wanted to know?

Maybe the tangent that it had just been about to go on about its research goals and dreams was a tad too much to drop on the captain's lap immediately after formally meeting her.
