(( Primary Sickbay – Deck 7, USS Artemis-A ))

Considering the mixed history that Gila had with the Captain - her subpar performance on her Cadet Cruise where Captain MacKenzie was a proctor, stupidly disobeying her on their very first mission together, her consistently cowardly avoidance of the Captain up until she’d finally managed apologize for her insubordination - it was an alarming tendency that Captain MacKenzie seemed to consistently locate her. Especially since Gila had taken active measures to ensure she’d spend as little time on the Artemis as possible.

Perhaps the Captain had some kind of sixth sense for locating mutinous lower deckers?

That thought was deeply concerning, and Gila was mentally preparing herself for a reprimand for all her transgressions - imagined and otherwise - when the Captain quite literally flummoxed her.

MacKenzie: Well, I read what happened on the Kitty Hawk...

oO What happ- Oo

She started biting the inside of her cheek as she experienced a psychologically motivated itch in the roof of her mouth. Gila knew that nothing was actively stabbing at her palate, but whenever she remembered the sensation of two serrated boney appendages shooting out  from the roof of her mouth, her brain started playing tricks on her. Had Ensign Gnai betrayed her trust? No, that thought was immediately dismissed. It wouldn’t do that. Had someone else aboard the Kitty Hawk realized what she’d done? How dangerous and out-of-control she’d proven capable of? She doubted it. Doctor Wong and Lieutenant Iko were many things, but particularly observant wasn’t necessarily their collective top quality.

oO Calm. Calm. Oo

Sadar: Wh-Wh-Wh... ::forced deep breaths:: Uhh... I-I... It was a... It was rough, Sir. As I’m sure it was for everyone... B-But all things considered, I, uhh... I-I’m handling it as best I can.

She had no doubt the Captain saw right through that.

MacKenzie: You’re not absolved from seeing a counselor. No one is, so don’t put it off.

For once, the Captain managed to put her at ease as Gila allowed the slightest smile. While ordinarily, Gila resisted meeting a counselor as much as the next crewman with things to hide, Frontier Day had a very convincing effect when it came to establishing the importance of mental health.

Sadar: D-Don’t worry, Sir. This is a counseling appointment I won’t run from... ::brief pause: As soon as I’m done with work.

MacKenzie: I thought things on board were relatively taken care of?

Gila belatedly realized that Commander Adea hadn’t briefed the Captain on her absence. It was understandable. From what Gila had been informed, Captain MacKenzie herself was pulling triple duty in order to reinforce Starfleet Medical’s presence everywhere in the system, so it was quite possible the Commander hadn’t had the chance yet.

Sadar: Oh, uhh, no Sir... I’m assisting crisis response efforts on Earth, and I want to make sure that we’ve reached a point of ‘treading water’ before I come back on board full-time. ::looks at the PADDs:: This is, uhh...

The Captain pointed at one of the PADDs oO Oh god no, why that one!? Oo and her expression turned decidedly mischievous.

MacKenzie: Starflirt? On the quest for galactic love after facing mortal doom?

Sadar: That is not mine! D-D-Definitely not! I-I-I’ve got w-way too much work t-to be doing- and I’m working! I-I swear, I’m very focused while on duty!

The Captain rolled her eyes, collecting the PADD from the floor.

MacKenzie: You’ve got to relax a little. You’re wound so tight I’m afraid your head might just pop off.

Sadar: ::turns a slightly deeper shade of violet:: I-I... I-I’ll take that under advisement, Sir…

Gila hoped that that’d be the end of the conversation, but unfortunately, Captain MacKenzie was nothing if not persistent.

MacKenzie: What do you do when you’re not working? Like, for fun.

Sadar: ::blinks in confusion:: F-Fun, Sir?

The Captain’s blue eyes narrowed dangerously, and Gila felt herself actively shrinking a few centimeters as she hunched together, trying to pack herself into a pocket dimension to escape this line of questioning.

MacKenzie: Yes, fun, Gila…

Sadar: I, uhh... ::eyes rapidly moving from side to side:: P-P-Please don’t p-put me on forced leave, Sir. I-I promise I’m doing okay!

MacKenzie: Response

It almost felt physically painful to have to report on her hobbies - meager as they were - to the one person who had a long history of reprimanding her for working too much. She’d already been put on forced leave by the crisis team! If she was going to be going through the same on the Artemis, she’d be going stir-crazy!!

Sadar: I-I like art. I cook… I sew?

MacKenzie: Response

Sadar: O-Oh, no, I’m very much an amateur, Sir. I-It’s just, uhh... It’s something to get my mind to focus on the process. E-Empty my head, as it were.

MacKenzie: Response
