to USS Artemis-A – StarBase 118 Star Trek PBEM RPG
((USS Artemis-A, deck 8, Chief Tactical Officer office))
Vitor listened attentively, taking another sip from his coffee. He nodded, but wasn’t yet sure how to approach it.
It was a reckless move. Something he would likely approve, suggest and/or do himself.
But still…
Silveira: Interesting. You realize there are a few flaws in doing that?
Cole: Absolutely Sir, especially now that we know there was a second Destroyer that was cloaked. That would have left us open to an attack, combined with a number of other variables that could have changed the situation in countless ways.
Vitor grinned. Definitely he was beginning to worry, as Cole reminded him of… Himself.
Silveira: Well, you could have chewed their shields first before ramming. If properly timed a wide phaser and torpedoes barrage would have helped. But as they say “insight is flawless”.
What is your evaluation of your performance?
Cole: Admittedly I should have expressed this at the time, but I had intended to fire a barrage of torpedoes just before our shields would have collided along with all forward phaser arrays as well.
Vitor smiled, took the finishing sip of his coffee, set down the cup and leaned back.
Silveira: Using all the forward arrays would mean they needed to recharge, and you need to consider the distance. Firing point blank will do us as much damage as the opponent.
Cole drank more than a sip. Vitor hoped that she wasn’t taking this conversation as an evaluation, or worse.
Cole: Sir, am I in trouble?
Vitor shook his head and leaned forward, opening his arms.
Silveira: No, of course not. You actually did well, given the circumstances. It was your first mission and you ended up in a space battle. I spent years before actually firing any of the ship's weapons in action. That’s not why I called you.
Cole: Response
Vitor tipped his head, rested his elbows on his desk and joined his hands.
Silveira: Without sounding condescending, I want you to take this lesson and learn from it. Don’t go to battle with the most outlandish tactic upfront. Sometimes the simplest solution is the best. If the other Destroyer was nearer, and they were coordinating, the Artemis would have been in big trouble. It’s like a game of chess. You have to think a few moves ahead.
Vitor hoped that Cole got the message. And didn’t ask if he liked chess. Vitor was really terrible at it, in whatever form he played. 3D, classic no matter what, he was really a “stain”.
Cole: Response
Vitor smiled and nodded, leaning back on his chair and opening his arms.
Silveira: I hope you don’t mind the advice. I am pleased to know that if we ever need you at Tactical you can handle the job.
Cole: Response
