((Poolside, Risa))

Imril: Did the Ronin bring you to Risa, or did you get here some other way?

Syrex: Oh, no. I came on a transport ship. The Ronin’s still in the Alpha Isles.

Imril: ::Mildly disappointed:: Ah. If the Ronin was here, I’d have called them up to see if I could set up a tour. I came over to the Badlands -- to the Artemis -- on an old Centaur-class. But I haven't gotten to see one of the more modern battleships up close yet.

Alyndra sighed. To her, Akira classes weren’t warships, they were her home. The Ronin certainly never felt like a battleship neither. Not just because it was nearly destroyed on her very first mission, but because of it’s charm. The 47 with it’s holographic cherry trees, it’s Zen gardens. The Warp Core!

Syrex: Well, if you ever want a tour feel free to stop by! Although I admit there may be closer Akira classes. I must say however, that I find seeing the Akira class as nothing more than a battleship somewhat problematic.

The ensign was left slightly stunned by her words. Their own, meant from curiosity, had produced an effect quite the opposite of the good-natured chit chat they had intended.

Imril: I didn’t say that it was ‘just’ a battleship. Though clearly I caused offense with my word choice.

Alyndra frowned.

Syrex: Because that’s my house. It’s my home, it’s where my family are. We aren’t soldiers. We’re Starfleet, we’re explorers.

Imril hoped their next words would diffuse the growing tension in this particular section of the pool.

Imril: I agree wholeheartedly. And one of the things which makes Starfleet the best at exploration is that we’re constantly innovating. There’s always something new to learn from our sister-ships and the people who operate them. I’m not particularly enraptured with the weapons and such on an Akira, myself. More the robust energy systems built into the class from their start. Power management happens to be my specialization. Not warfare.

Syrex: I don’t care for the implications of what something was designed to do. I care more for what it is capable of. I understand that you’re an engineer and are used to seeing the world in a mechanical sense, but I’m sure you know what the Artemis is capable of. In a sense other than the specifications listed on a PADD, am I right?

Imril might have defended their original, curiosity-driven, intention by pointing out that they had already seen enough vessels to know that how the ‘default’ tech on each was utilized and managed could vary wildly between ships of the same class. Different innovations put forth by distinct sets of crewmen with varied backgrounds responding to different challenges. Countless workarounds, endless experimentation. Every starship -- Starfleet ones, anyway -- was a marvel unto itself.

But that line of conversation was probably one best steered out of in this case. So, instead they nodded in acknowledgement of Alyndra’s point.

Imril: Yes, you are. I apologize.

Syrex: response

Imril: So then, what’s the Ronin really like? As a community? What would I find there that I wouldn’t find on any other ship?

Syrex: response
