((Armory | Deck 08 | USS Artemis))

The two security officers were standing on either side of a workbench in the armory. Both of them had a rifle in hand, inspecting every part of it and making sure that it was in a serviceable condition.

In line with his previous talk with Hiro before he left for the Ronin, Savel was doing his best to guide something that resembled a conversation. He thought he was doing somewhat well at it too.

Savel: You have certainly had a unique introduction to life onboard a Starfleet vessel. I would propose the possibility that the ship's next assignment will be of a more routine nature, but I'm afraid that would not be accurate. I have yet to embark on a mission with the Artemis that I would describe as normal, or mundane.

Kel took a new battery and placed it into the rifle, allowing it to start recharging.

Kel: That part I was prepared for. Starfleet Academy prepares you for things to go sideways, upside down, and inside out. It actually drew me to Starfleet in the first place.

Certainly more interesting than joining the dry science academy back on Vulcan.

Savel: All of Vulcan is dry, not just the area around ShiKar. In fact, I rather enjoy the dry weather. It is hard to replicate that environment here. ::a few beats for it set in:: Ah, I have just realized what you meant by “dry”. I will grant you that the species you encounter within Starfleet are much more eccentric than those you would find on Vulcan.

Savel, who had probably just given Kel the exact example of Vulcan he was trying to avoid by coming to Starfleet, was then shown the weapon that Kel had been working on.

Kel: Well, that’s one down. What do you think? Good enough to go back on the rack?

After a quick inspection of the display, Savel shifted a glance back to Kel.

Savel: Indeed, I believe it is in an acceptable condition now.

While Kel returned his rifle back to the rack, Savel continued to break down the rifle that he had in front of him. The display had started to show that it could not get an accurate reading of the power level left in the battery. Somewhere between the battery and the display was a disconnect or other obstruction and he was focused on finding it.

Not so focused that he just ended the conversation, however, as he would have been likely to do when he first arrived on the Artemis

Savel: Ensign, I will admit your choice has left me curious. I have noticed that most security officers on board do not like assignments that keep them at the security center. There is a shared belief among them that it removes them from the “action”. Do you not share this concern?

Kel: Response

By carefully working his way down the length of the rifle towards the battery slot, Savel found where one of the wires had come loose. Probably from someone rushing the task of replacing the battery the last time it was needed. A look was shot over in the direction of Viktor the armory tech crewman, but nothing was said for the moment.

Savel: A valid point. I am glad that we agree.

Kel: Response
