((The Muddy Targ - Kahines II))
Lyara: ::Sliding the PADD towards the settlers:: Got a bit of an arts and crafts project for you guys.
The settlers stared at the PADD then looked back up to the three officers.
Bergmen: We would appreciate your help creating a visual representation of the terrain and local specifics - landmarks, possible dangers, etc. - surrounding the dig site.
Hazel: ::earflick:: Get to it, big guy.
Alroyo smiled at the two’s familiarity, it reminded her of the close bonds she formed when she lived on her dad’s farm.
Filistrien: Has there been any greater alterations to the local landscape, since the site hadn’t been discovered until now?
Barto: Well, we’ve started moving the forest line further back since we need to make room for larger fields.
Hazel: ::scoffs:: It’s not like the trees got angry at us for that though, and we’re planting new ones out of the way of the new field allotments.
Barto: I didn’t say that-
Lyara raised her eyebrow at the mention of the tree's emotional behaviors.
Lyara: Do your trees get angry often?
Filistrien: Is that a common superstition on Kahines II?
Hazel: Trees getting angry? ::tail flicks:: Something like that. We’ve got some pretty big wildlife on the other side of the forest, but they never cross it. Something in the trees ward them off, but I think it’s got more to do with that awful scent they give off than tree ‘spirits’.
Alroyo made a mental note to look into the trees and their “scent”. If her experience on the farm served her correctly, her father would order scents to be put around the perimeter to ward off certain animals.
Bergmen: It's interesting now to see now how the distribution of the "stinking" trees in that section relates to the dig site's area, especially when compared to the habitats of the predators mentioned earlier. It’s not chemical pollution that harms the vegetation…
She didn’t know what he meant but his point seemed to land with the settlers.
Hazel: It could be, but nothing we noticed from here.
Barto: All right, I think this should do it.
Barto now finished with his annotations, slid the PADD back across the table and Lyara in turn picked it up. After an examination of the map she found he had drawn out local wildlife’s routes and other natural features not picked up on the map. She placed the PADD back down so the other officers could see.
Filistrien: What is this?
He pointed to a marking near the edge of the ruin that had what she assumed to be a skull.
Hazel: Ah, it’s a Scorpionmole Burrow. Nasty critters. They’re part of the reason why we had to go look for my niece. They tunnel into the ground, and if she wandered in there, we’d stand just about no chance of finding her.
Bergmen: If they dig tunnels of size four years old…
Hazel sized up the Ensign in her mind in a shift of tone from her previous friendliness.
Hazel: More like five years old.
Alroyo had no idea how big a five year old caitian would be, but she knew how big a five year old Bajoran was. And they could grow to be pretty big.
Lyara: Must be some big five year olds.
Barto: ::points to Ollie:: Their stinger would take down your ensign in a matter of seconds. Neurotoxin. And their teeth secrete some kind of enzyme that will necrotize flesh if you don't get the bite treated in time.
Whether Lyara was a five year old or not, the idea of a scorpionmole getting her did not sound like a pleasant experience. A second mission where Lyara got an injury would be a little embarrassing too so she’d like to save herself from that.
Bergmen: Do we need to know more about these scorpionmoles?
Lyara: We could always look up more on the database once we get back.
The Petty Officer gave a nod.
Filistrien: My main concern is their proximity to the ruins themselves. It would behoove us to be on guard during the survey, in case the Scorpionmoles consider our conduct there as us encroaching on their territory.
Bergmen: Have you been inside the ruins? Can you tell us anything about them?
Barto: No, sorry. We were never inside of that fortress.
Mx. Fiell cleared their throat to gain the group’s attention.
Bergmen: Yes, Mx. Fiell?
Alroyo let out a small sigh as he used the correct identification. It was a small thing but it meant a lot to her and probably the same amount to Mx. Fiell.
Fiell: After receiving information about the ruins, we sent a small security team to investigate what Hazel and Barto found. They examined only the perimeter and a small area near one of the entrances, so we cannot provide details about what lies inside or how deep these ruins went. Based on the visual documentation our team brought back, most of the ruins are above ground, but their layout suggests that some parts may still be buried.
With no questions asked about their explanation they kept going.
Fiell: That’s all we know. Once we confirmed that the ruins were of Klingon origin, we closed the access to the area and contacted both the Federation and the Klingon Empire authorities.
Filistrien: Sound choice, but it doesn’t bring us closer to understanding why the ruins weren’t discovered until now…
Lyara: I dunno, on Bajor we still find discoveries every once in a while in even the more developed cities. It took thousands of years to find B’hala and that was a whole city! Of course, we’re only speculating until we actually figure it out.
Bergmen: Response
Barto: Well, I suppose that’s what you folks are here for, right?
She nodded in agreement, that was what they had arrived on the planet for. And by the Prophets she would get to the bottom of all this.
((Timeskipe: Later that night))
((Guest Accommodations - Wallace Colony, Kahines II))
With a map drawn and colonists interviewed, Lyara could officially say they had a good day of work. The group had been informed of a guest accommodation to report to upon completion of their designated tasks.
Lyara entered the guest accommodations to see Gila and Imril talking in the living room.
Lyara: Knock knock!
Bergmen: Response
Sadar looked up as they entered and stood up to greet them.
Sadar: Welcome. Did any issues occur on your end?
Filistrien: No Sir, the interview proceeded without complications. I will submit a full report, including Ensign Lyara’s transcripts, to the Griffin computer before the end of the day.
Sadar: Thank you, Petty Officer. ::to Lyara and Bergmen:: Give me the brief rundown then.
Lyara: We found out that the ruin was discovered by the two settlers trying to find their niece who had run off. Technically she is the one to be credited with the discovery. ::Alroyo held up a PADD:: We also got a map of the area drawn by Hazel and Barto themselves.
Alroyo placed the PADD down on the table and stepped back to allow Bergmen to add anything on.
Bergmen: Response
Filistrien: What of the Klingon scientists?
Gila’s expression implied a certain nervousness about the question at hand.
Imril: Response
Sadar: W-Well, it could’ve gone worse… Most of the scientists seem interested in doing the survey with as little conflict as possible, but one seems... Irregularly aggressive, even for a Klingon.
Alroyo raised her eyebrow at the mention of an unusually aggressive Klingon.
Bergmen/Imril: Response
Alroyo moved to sit on the couch and crossed her arms as she thought of why a Klingon scientist would act so aggressively.
Lyara: Was it a personal problem she had with you?
Sadar: Response
Bergmen/Imril/Filistrien: Response
Since the Dominion War, there had always been a sense of comradery between Bajorans and Klingons due to their governments close cooperation while part of their fleet was stationed there. So she had met her fair share of Klingons and experienced their sometimes aggressive aspects. But the description of the scientist’s behavior raised some red cards in her head.
Lyara: If she’s as aggressive as she sounded, maybe there’s something more to her behavior. I’m not saying there’s a conspiracy involving the empire itself, but she might have some thoughts or beliefs here herself.
Sadar/Bergmen/Imril/Filistrien: Response
