((CMO’s Office - Primary Sickbay, Deck 7, USS Artemis-A))

It was a familiar pattern for the two of them to fall into. Whenever the Artemis entered a period of slower operation - when the fate of the universe itself didn’t feel like it had fallen onto their shoulders like invisible shackles, weighing them down and dragging them through purgatory itself - Gila would come into the familiar day-to-day operation of Sickbay. And when those delightful periods of calm imposed themselves, she would come to Commander Adea’s office - much like this - to report on what was going on in Sickbay.

She presumed many of the other higher ranking Doctors did something similar, and while she had initially feared her check-ins with the Chief Medical officer - presumably in part due to his Betazoid abilities - it had, inevitably, become yet another part of the duties aboard the Artemis that she’d gotten used to in her time of service.

She almost didn’t hesitate outside his door anymore! Progress was progress, however slight.

Adea: Good, and I imagine our supplies of hyronalyn and other radiation medications are running low?

Sadar: Yes Sir. The intent is to have our medical stores completely restocked by the time we set out again, but DS224 is similarly low at the moment, so it might be a while. I would recommend we refrain from radiation diving until such a time as our replicator rations have recovered.

Her entirely sincere word of caution against the frankly obscene degree with which the Artemis’ crew seemed to approach danger was - apparently - accepted as a light-hearted attempt at humor, and though Gila’s brow ridges trembled in slight dismay at the amused smile gracing the CMO’s expression, she knew that reminding him of just how likely such suicidal conduct was for this crew in particular was a futile effort.

Adea: I hadn’t been planning on it, Lieutenant. But how are things with you?

Progress was progress, if however slight, and it would take a great deal more progress for Gila to start getting comfortable with the fact that Commander Adea took interest in her private life as well. It perhaps wasn’t that surprising - she was certain that he heard most of the reports about the running of Sickbay from the Assistant Chief Morgan - but Gila still couldn’t get used to it.

Sadar: No, uhh... Th-Things are... Good? I-I’ve almost finished moving into our new family quarters, and Kolya’s taking the chance to acquire furnishings for his room while we’re on DS224.

In a moment of kind reprieve, Commander Adea busied himself with the teapot, allowing Gila to squirm in relieved silence at the trajectory of the conversation.

Adea: Ah, and you’re slightly concerned about what he’s going to come back with?

The fact that this was so readily observed by her superior officer made Gila uncomfortable. She only hoped her apprehension regarding Kolya’s interior decorating skills wasn’t as easily observed by her overeager nephew.

Sadar: I-If I must be completely honest, then... Yes? He’s, uhh... I-I am proud of him for embracing his artistic talents more readily since joining us on the Artemis, but his tastes are... Eclectic. Less so for Betazoid sensibilities, I’m sure, but I admit to being slightly overstimulated with all the color suddenly introduced to my quarters.

Adea: ::chuckling:: Well if you need to retreat somewhere, you’re more than welcome to hide out here. How is it going, having him around?

Gila fell silent as she considered the question. When she left Mizabet more than a decade ago, Kolya had been a small child. She remembered sneaking into his room late at night to bid him goodbye, watching him sleeping while he clutched the colorful teddy she’d given him on his eighth birthday, and then stealing away before he awoke. She had been so sure she would never see him again, and she vividly remembered how heavy her heart felt as she left her sister’s home, duplicity weighing on her mind.

Meeting Kolya again on Mizar IV - a surprise concocted by her sister in her effort to smuggle Kolya off-world - had been an event so reeling that she hadn’t had time to properly pause to understand how much he’d changed in the decade since she’d left. And every day since then, she’d run at a breakneck speed to even just keep up with him.

Sadar: ... Suddenly going from being alone to being a household with a teenager is... Quite the adjustment. But I’m pleased that he has the opportunity to see more of the universe while he’s still young.

Adea: Response

Sadar: It’s not an opportunity that is easily obtainable for my people... ::considers:: Even if the circumstances are as they are.

Adea: Response
