(( Operations Centre, Deck 5, USS Artemis-A ))
Time always felt as if it stopped when the ship docked at the station or near a planet for shore leave. And now, over Risa, that was doubly true.
The Operation Centre, typically lively, succumbed to the same lethargy as the rest of the ship, manned only by the essential skeletal crew. They tended to the ship's systems without the usual pressures, allowing time for those who, during their downtime, finally engaged in their long-postponed experiments or efforts to improve aspects of the ship they felt were lacking.
Lieutenant JG Bergmen was the second kind of person. Yes, on one side, he really wanted, like many others, to enjoy the calm and carefree paradise world beneath Artemis - and no, he didn't believe that having seen and lived on a paradise world meant every other similar world would be equally dull - yet his professionalism drew him to the project, which had settled in dust and been forgotten in the ship's database. The project he read in Starfleet Journal about and which enhanced many of their sister ships. The Project, if implemented back on Earth, could have helped them during their last mission…
But then Frontier Day happened… and after that, there was always something else…
With his nose buried in the PADD, the lieutenant initially missed the door to the Center opening as a newcomer in gold entered. It was the voice of the young Bajoran lieutenant that finally captured Ollie's attention.
Vailani: Lieutenant, do you know where the Chief of Operations office is?
Ollie initially raised his hand to point toward Commander Glim's office at the back of the Center, but he stopped midway and let his hand drop back down.
Bergmen: Uh, sorry, ma’am. We are still waiting on a replacement for our OPS Chief. I can direct you to the deck supervisor since the ACOO is down on the planet.
Vailani: Well … you are looking at her :: in greeting :: Lieutenant Vailani, nice to meet you.
Bergmen's eyes sparkled like fireflies.
Bergmen: In that case, the left door is in the back leading to COO office, ma’am. :: in greeting :: Great to have you onboard, ma’am.
Ollie recognized in the lieutenant's gaze that her politeness was genuine, yet not an attempt at small talk. He then released her hand and retrieved the PADD from the console where he had set it down earlier.
Vailani: Have you got the current operations task list? I'd like to review duty assignments, rotations and individual projects. Are you able to provide me with any information on this?
Bergmen: Yes, all rotations will already be on your computer in your office, but I can create a summary for you to have them together if you'd like. Regarding duty posting and individual projects, the first one is in the ship database, while the second was mostly variable as it came and went, but I can provide a list of current approved individual projects. Most of them are science or engineering, so usual bunch of now we have a time projects.
The Chief kindly suggested they find a comfy spot at one of the consoles while she began accessing the relevant files. Ollie followed.
Vailani: :: nods :: My understanding that the Chief engineer is on leave? Do we have any outstanding engineering jobs that have impacted our task lists?
Bergmen: Yes, Commander Salkath took some personal time when we arrived at Risa. Unfortunately, I don't know when he will return; that’s a bit beyond my pay grade. But engineers don't stay idle. Aside from the usual improvements to the warp core and secondary energy systems, we recently received a request for a spare shuttle computer core for something they referred to as… a portable computer core? Yes, that one. :: points on the console screen on file header::
Bergmen allowed the lieutenant to review the file and its details in silence before speaking again.
Bergmen: Mentioning individual projects, ma’am, did you hear about project FORT?
Vailani: Response
Bergmen: Focused Operation Refit. Refit of OPS facilities and systems on Luna-class starships. Artemis was supposed to be upgraded last year, but… you know… things fell through the cracks. I am now working on a study of requirements and possible improvements to the original FORT project. I would like to begin the refit now since we still have time before Artemis leaves Risa.
Bergmen lifted the PADD he held and gave it to Lieutenant Vailani.
Vailani: Response
Bergmen: Of course, there is still some time, so please review and let me know your thoughts. ::smiles::
