Ever since she had returned to the Artemis, Ava had felt out of it. Not of herself. They had begun treatment, of course, and she was supposedly recovered.
Turns out the mind isn't so easy to heal after such experiences. Ava was not a woman to be kept back and her answer to all life's miseries was more misery.
Not her own.
Roy Bancroft was the intended target. She owed him a race, that she fully expected to win, and it just so happened the fledgling colony of Rylor had a running track. Small but practical for their needs.
The Federation colony had been in operation for 3 decades, and had a sizeable capital city. It's population boom was due to its natural beauty. Many Federation citizens had opted for a life on the planet. Not to be mistaken with Risa, the pleasure planet. Rylor was a city that people chose to live on; retired Starfleet officers, Federation citizens fleeing the Dominion War including a sizeable Betazoid community, and a whole array of species had chosen to make Rylor their home.
And some running enthusiasts she was happy to note.

Word had gotten out and a small cluster of the crew were gathered. She had heard rumours that there had been bets placed. Ensign Garlanak had wagered their entire collection of vintage Captain Proton action figurines.
The stakes were high.
Stood across from her was her opponent. The doctor who was gradually becoming a friend. Someone she was glad to see had survived Callis and it's torment.
