to USS Artemis-A – StarBase 118 Star Trek PBEM RPG
((USS Artemis-A, deck 1, Bridge))
The lights on the bridge dimmed and Vitor felt something else was off, but couldn't point out what. A second later they resumed normal functioning.
But soon after they went down again.
Jetripar beat Vitor.
Jetripar: I can assume that's... not good? What's happening?
Silveira: Report.
Imril: The virus has breached the Security Mainframe! I think it heard me call out… The Traitor’s name, just now. On the security monitor.
Instinctively Vitor stepped to his console, stopping midway and turning.
Silveira: Secure the bridge functions and all relevant systems.
Imril: On it.
Jetripar: Are we safe here? Should we move somewhere more secure?
Bergmen: Response
Vitor knew it was risky, and he started regretting his decision to advance on all fronts.
Silveira: If needed, reset all your work. And fix this.
Imril: A reset would set us back. Let the virus regroup. Right now, it’s running busy. Running hot. I suggest we need to keep up the pressure.
Jetripar: To what end? Where's the breaking point?
Bergmen: Response
Silveira: It's a little known secret that Captain MacKenzie doesn't airlock only Ensigns. ::he looked at Imril and Ol:: She also does it to Lieutenant Commanders. I don’t want the bridge in a blackout.
Imril: ::To Bergmen:: Lieutenant, I can confirm that the virus is only present here in the security grid. Your isolated system is still secure. ::To Silveira:: Sir, I can isolate and reboot the Bridge security grid. Flush the virus long enough to upload a semi-refined version of our counter-program into it.
Jetripar: Any move is a move forward right now, it seems.
Silveira: Do it Lieutenant.
Bergmen: Response
Imril nodded and carried out the order. Vitor frowned as he remained standing.
He narrowed his eyes when the Security Station blinked out entirely.
He would give Imril a little more time, but he would call everything off if they weren’t getting power soon.
But Imril again proved he was one of the best Engineers Vitor served with.
The lights returned and the bridge was back to its normal routine.
Imril: I think I know why the virus accessed the lights. It went through the Bridge security footage of the past several hours, deleting footage. Footage of the Director.
They looked at Jetripar, Vitor raising his eyebrows.
Jetripar: Me? Why me?
Bergmen: Response
Vitor could think of a few reasons, but he didn’t want to detail then and maybe he wasn’t right.
Silveira: Why not? Was this a murder attempt?
Imril: I don't think the virus tried to kill him, no. I don't see any evidence that it tried to access life support or anti-personnel defences. I think it tried to prevent further recordings of him being made by shutting off the lights. Literally blacking him out. It killed audio recording too, which the reboot re-established. It's trying to reduce its workload.
Vitor frowned at the implication.
Jetripar: Can we perhaps avoid the word "killed" going forward? This is twice today that my life has been threatened by foreign agents.
Vitor arched his eyebrow at Jetripar.
Silveira: I assure you, Secretary, your security is one of my top concerns. I will defend you with my life.
Bergmen: Response
Jetripar: I'm no computer whiz by any means. But this attempt on my life, which thankfully failed to leave me scarred and deformed, gave me an idea, if I may.
Vitor tilted his head curiously.
Silveira: Please… What’s on your mind?
Bergmen/Imril: Response
Jetripar: Thank you. This may be overly simplistic, but could the virus be convinced to attack itself by seeing itself as a target?
Vitor was starting to feel tired of this virus. He shrugged and turned to Imril and Ol.
Silveira: Lieutenant’s is that feasible?
Bergmen/Imril: Response
Jetripar: I suppose it wouldn't be as easy as drawing a picture of... that ship on it and saying "look!", would it?
Vitor shook his head and shrugged, it certainly wasn't.
Silveira: Nothing with this virus is easy.
Bergmen/Imril: Response
Vitor took a deep breath and rubbed his neck. He took a few steps before turning.
Silveira: Lieutenant Imril, keep up the pressure on the virus, if possible implement Secretary Jetripar suggestion. Lieutenant Bergmen, safeguard the fundamental systems. I don’t want to see this happening again.
Bergmen/Imril/Jetripar: Response
Vitor took a few more steps as they worked on his orders, when the familiar vice of one of “his people” sounded across the Bridge.
Tactical: Commander, one of the Nascaik ships as broken formation.
Vitor opened his arms in frustration. He shook his head as he walked back to the center seat.
Silveira: Just what we needed. Helm set a parallel course. Lieutenant Bergmen, get me a position for the rest of the Nascaik ships. If anyone else moves I want to know before they take another step. Lieutenant Imril, just in case get damage repair teams ready.
Secretary Jetripar please take the seat next to mine, I'll give you clearance to use the console.
Bergmen/Imril/Jetripar: Response
Vitor sat down in the Captain's chair. He tapped a few commands at Zie’s console, giving the minimal permissions for Jetripar to use the XO console.
He took a deep breath, rested his hands on each end arm of the seat, and leaned back, keeping himself straight.
Silveira: Half impulse, shields and weapons down until my order. Is there anything new on our away teams?
Bergmen/Imril/Jetripar: Response
