MacKenzie sat across from a standing Lieutenant Storm. The tactical officer told her of a potential training exercise she had planned, but in doing so, she also raised questions of Lieutenant Bancroft's performance from a prior exercise, and aired her concerns.

Storm:  When we debriefed, Lieutenant Bancroft said he would not shoot a friendly even on stun in a drill.  I’m trying to find a way to help him see the importance of acting the same way in training as he would act in the field. After listening to her concerns, the commanding officer offered her a pointed question.

MacKenzie: You believe he's a liability?

Alex’s stomach churned as her brain searched for the best answer she could give.

Storm: I believe … he doesn’t have to be.

She shrugged.

MacKenzie: So what are you going to do about it?

It was as simple a question in depth as it appeared to be at face value. It was clear to MacKenzie, and Storm, that Bancroft was underperforming in this area. And through her question, the commanding officer made it obvious that what was to be done about it now lay in Storm's hands. The red-headed CO often believed that collegial accountability was more effective than any kind of authoritative imposition.

Storm: I’m going to find a way to help him wrap his mind around what he doesn’t yet understand, and given some time, I will help him get ready to successfully go into the field.

MacKenzie: You think he should be restricted?

Storm:  Obviously, whether or not you send him out is up to you.  My job - as I understand it - is to get him ready for whenever you choose to send him.

MacKenzie nodded slowly.

MacKenzie: Yes, it certainly is.

Storm:  Understood.

Alex put her shoes back on, then raised her eyes to meet those of her commanding officer. MacKenzie stood and smoothed the front of her uniform.

MacKenzie: If anyone's up to the task, I'm sure you are. Don't worry though, I've seen cases far worse than him.

MacKenzie offered a nod and a conciliatory smile, before scooting past the tactical officer, knowing that, while it was true Bancroft wasn't the worst she'd seen, Storm did have her work cut out for her...

Addison strolled along the deck quietly humming to herself as she walked, thumbing through the book in her hand. When she reached the entrance to her quarters, she was greeted by a neatly wrapped box. Her brow furrowed, thinking about what it might be or who might have left it... Picking it up, she tucked the book under her arm before she examined the tag on the box and read it aloud.

MacKenzie: For a night where no one is waiting on your decision. ~Lt Jg Cole

She passed through the doors to her quarters and set the book on her desk, then proceeded to unwrap the box, revealing a hasparat cooking experience with a Bajoran chef's guide and "optional chaos." Tonight, it seemed, the choice of what to make for dinner had already been decided.

Thankfully.

End Scene for MacKenzie!
