((Main Shuttlebay, Deck 11, USS Artemis))Gnai had heard through the grapevine that there was to be a tricorder refresher course, and it had leapt at the chance to improve its skills. This was great! Finally, a chance to make some progress on the work that it had joined Starfleet for, and get more comfortable with using scientific equipment in the field. The Academy had prepared it, yes, but a chance to go in the field and really take the TR-590s (or maybe the TR-600s, that would be even better!) for a spin? It had cleared its whole schedule for the day, as much as it could. It was not going to miss this for the world.
Jovenan: Ensign Chevalier, right? Hello! Thank you for coming!
Chevalier: Response
Jovenan: Here you go! I invited a few more people, and there were some volunteers signing in as well, so we’ll have to wait for a few moments longer before we can start.
Savel: Lieutenant, Ensign. ::a nod accompanied his greeting to each:: It is good to see you both.
Three officers were already there, two of whom he recognized. Lt. Jovenan, from Romulus and who looked far more like herself than when it last saw her properly, and Ens. Savel, from the prison. Two deeply unpleasant experiences, but Gnai was not going to let that put a damper on its excitement to get out there and get its suits hands dirty. Nothing would! This was going to be a good day, no matter what.
And standing there was a third one, another ensign, that Gnai had not had the chance to properly meet yet...
Gnai: ::to Jovenan:: Good to see you, sir! ::a wave to Savel and Chevalier, as chipper as a robotic voice can be:: This will be enlightening.
Chevalier/Any: Response
Gnai followed Ens. Savel in grabbing a tricorder from the box to the side of Jovenan, seeing that the other ensign had one already. With delight, Gnai noticed that they were the newer, TR-600 models. At the Academy, it had mostly interacted with the older TR-590 Mark XI models, serviceable and dependable, but out-of-date with the arrival of the 600s. There had been a few chances to play with Starfleet's newer toys, but they'd mostly been in biology-focused courses. The additional medical tricorder functionality had meant that the focus was more on getting the future doctors and nurses up to speed with what they'd be using on a daily basis. But on a starship, and one so well-equipped and up-to-date as the Artemis? They'd get a chance to use all the newest gadgets, pushing the frontiers of science, just as it had dreamed of as a polyp.
The wait gave Gnai ample excuse to poke around at the tool slightly, lightly flashing with excitement. Finally, something normal and something that it was at least mildly prepared for, and enthused about.
Once they were mostly gathered, Jovenan started to address the team that was getting ready to depart.
Jovenan: Good morning, everyone! I’m Lieutenant Jovenan, and I’ll be your training officer for the day. Today, we’ll learn and refresh our skills on how to gather, analyse and record data using a tricorder in the field. I’ll let you know of the exact scenario as we get on our way, but we’ll be heading to the rural Rakantha Province on Bajor. We’ll have quite a lot of walking ahead of us, so did everyone remember to get good shoes and a water bottle?
Savel: I believe I'm sufficiently prepared.
Gnai couldn't help but be mildly amused at such suggestions. It had no need for shoes, and it was a water bottle, more or less. Besides, they would be fine, wouldn't they? The ship was close by, the Bajorans were friendly, the weather (it had checked, as the announcement had mentioned where they were going) was supposed to be reasonably decent. Meteorologists were often wrong, sure, but after how rough the mission was, its luck had to turn at some point, didn't it?
Gnai: Aye sir!
Chevalier/Any: Response
Jovenan: Okay. There’s a replicator in the shuttle if anyone realises they need something. We’re still missing a person, so let’s wait for a few more minutes before boarding the shuttle.
Gnai wondered who else would be joining them on this little excursion. Probably not most of the others that it had met on the mission.
Savel: Which shuttle will we be taking, Lieutenant?
Chevalier/Any: Response
Jovenan: I got us the Kerynitis, you can drop your stuff in there already if you want. Any volunteers to pilot it?
oO Not in a million years. OoBut Gnai said nothing, just following the others to the ramp and waited outside the shuttle. It hadn't been on many shuttle rides, but it had found the few that had crossed between an atmosphere and space to be endlessly thrilling.
Savel: I volunteer for the task; however, I would understand hesitation from others given how my last flight ended. In which case, I have no issue with conceding piloting duties to another.
Chevalier/Any: Response
As the others boarded the ship, Gnai examined the interior with curiosity, as it had no pack of water or additional garments as suggested by the Lieutenant to store. It needed to find the best place to sit, to watch their descent through the atmosphere.
Savel: Lieutenant, how long do you anticipate this training exercise will keep us on Bajor?
Jovenan: Response
Savel: Very well, I believe I am ready to depart whenever the rest of the team is sufficiently prepared.
oO Ah, yes. That one's the best seat. OoGnai had found where it wanted to be, and sat its suit down, prepared to leave as well. The view outside the shuttle now was still the same grey of duranium that it had grown to expect in Starfleet ships, but soon enough it would be the void of space.
Gnai: Ready sir, as well.
Jovenan/Chevalier/Any: Response
As the other ensign moved around to place his belongings in the shuttle, settling it near to where Gnai was, it waved to him with both a tendril and an arm of its suit. Now was as decent a time as any for introductions.
Gnai: It is good to meet you, this ::with a gesture to itself:: is Ensign Gnai, science officer. Your name is...?
Chevalier: Response
Coincidence of coincidences, that was the other ensign that it was sharing a berth with! With all the hustle and bustle of Gnai setting up its quarters, and then running around to deal with the various paperwork and meetings and check-ups and what-have-you that came with a new duty post, their schedules hadn't overlapped for them to meet. But now was as good a time as any.
Gnai: Fantastic! It is good to meet you, apologies for not making contact sooner.
Chevalier: Response
All there was to do now, it seemed, was to wait and see who else turned up.
