(( Security office, Deck 8, USS Artemis ))

Still skittish about returning to the Da’al planet where the bugs don’t come to play, they come to slay, Yogan spent his off-duty time familiarizing himself with his new home. The root-and-branch refit of the erstwhile USS Doyle showed attention to detail in every command interface, length of bulkhead paneling, and interior space. Whoever was responsible for gifting them such a state of the art starship deserved a Daystrom Prize, or at least a thank you card signed by the senior staff.

There were still a few places Yogan had yet to investigate. He overheard some crewmen chit chatting about the ship’s lounge, but the universal translator seemed unable to render a particular word from Brikarite into Trill via Federation Standard. The glitch left Yogan with the mistaken impression that the proprietor was called Elisa Yum. Once corrected, Yogan looked forward to dropping by Elysium later that day.

But first, the visit to the security office served both a professional and a personal purpose. Yogan found the space utilitarian, but efficiently designed. Eminently built for purpose. He strode to his destination, the security chief’s office, rang the chime, and stepped through the doorway once admitted in.

Yalu: Hello, lieutenant. Have you a moment?

Osuna: response

Yalu: You shot Lieutenant Dakora on the planet.

Osuna: response (if desired)

Yalu: And I didn’t. ::beat:: And I wanted to tell you why.

Yogan briefly recounted the Greatest Hits version of Excalibur’s mission to Cytaris, where a species of orb-dwellers played a game of bodyswap switcheroo with the crew. Yogan stuck to the relevant parts of the story—switching bodies with Talos, temporarily “unjoining” from Yalu, and returning to find a copy-paste of Talos’ memories residing in the symbiont when everything was put back to rights. He omitted the story of Sornax the goldfish and the whole Kuppasoop saga. Those bits were best told over a stiff drink and a plate of chicken wings.

Yalu: When the moment came to push the trigger, I couldn’t do it. I couldn’t fire on…myself.

Osuna: response

Yalu: I’ll be working through that issue with the counselor, but in the meantime, I do have a request of you. ::Beat:: It’s been a while since my last marksmanship training...

(( Flashback — Holodeck 1, Deck 6, USS Resolution — SD 239808.25 ))

As the holodeck doors slid open, Yogan saw that Sherlock was waiting for him.  He also noticed the array of weapons on display, which made the type-2 phaser in his hands seem pretty tame by comparison.

Yalu:  ::nods::  Lieutenant.  ::holds up his phaser::  I’m guessing I won’t need this.

Sherlock:  ::giving a grin and a shake of the head:: That’s a little small for what I have planned for you.

Yogan looked at the row of weapons, most of which were completely unfamiliar to him.  They were all of similar composition and aesthetic, the uniform gunmetal grey and balanced geometry a signature of standard Federation weapons design.  Yogan’s eyes returned to Aine.

Yalu:  ::smirks::  Does the house care to make a recommendation?

Aine walked up to the rack of rifles, hands clasped behind her back. She quickly turned and began what one could almost describe as a sales pitch.

Sherlock:  Here before you is a selection of Star Fleets current rifles. Some you may be familiar with, some are rarer and only issued to specialist teams. Everything from the Type 3 variants all the way up to Type 28 and 33’s. I recommend the Type 3B for today.

Yogan was gobsmacked.  There were 33 different types of phaser?

(( End Flashback ))

Yalu: ...and I was wondering if you had some training modules I could run. I love StratOps, but it was a desk job at DS224 and I never needed to worry about arming myself. ::beat:: Now that I’m out in the real world, I need some practice.

Osuna: response
