(( Captain’s Ready Room – Deck 1, USS Artemis-A ))

Addison sat behind the large mahogany desk leaning back in her chair, the toes of her feet pressing into the floor at regular intervals causing her to rock forward and backward. On the couch in her ready room sat the first officer of the Artemis – he’d brought her up to speed with the operations on the ship, and she’d informed him of the disastrous trip to Bajor by Lieutenant Jovenan’s team. But, Chevalier was on the mend, and it appeared that the necessary upgrades to the ship’s systems were also well on their way, which meant they would be able to depart DS9 in plenty of time to make the trip back to Earth to take part in the Frontier Day celebrations…

Joy.

Dakora: Sounds like it was touch-and-go there for a bit. Glad to hear Chevalier is on the mend. ::He frowned and shook his head.:: The kid must’ve been a real bastard in a past life because his luck is awful. Stepping on a land mine on training op…

His voice trailed off. She couldn’t help but think of her interactions with the ensign so far.

MacKenzie: ::deadpan:: Not outside the realm of possibility, from my observations.

Talos settled back into the sofa a bit.

Dakora: Any idea where we’re headed after leave? Back to the Borderlands, I’d imagine?

Her lips pursed slightly as her forehead smoothed, sending any hint of a good mood evaporating from her face. His gaze met hers.

MacKenzie:  Earth. We’re supposed to be joining most of the fleet for Frontier Day celebrations. ::flatly:: It’s a glorified parade through space, with a demonstration of Starfleet’s new fleet formation mode…

His eyes eyebrows raised – obviously not the answer he expected. It wasn’t for her, either… The gesture was a massive waste of resources, and a tactically poor decision – with so much of the fleet being withcalled, it meant that the remaining ships in volatile areas of the galaxy would be left without reinforcements. To Addison, that area also included the Borderlands, but apparently Starfleet didn’t seem to think twice about requiring them to attend the pagentry.

Dakora: You’ve got to be kidding me. ::He leaned forward, rubbing his chin pensively.:: Don’t suppose there is any way we can get out of it?

MacKenzie: No, I don’t think so. Nothing I can think of, anyway. The thought of leaving the Borderlands to its own devices for even a minute is not something I feel good about.

Dakora: Response

She rolled her eyes and turned in her chair to face out the window. Behind them, the massive pylons of the Cardassian-built station loomed over them.

MacKenzie: Starfleet doesn’t seem to think that’s a problem. Even so, there are other areas of the galaxy in far worse shape than the Borderlands. I can’t imagine them being okay with the idea of withdrawing so much of the fleet’s support from those places.

Dakora: Response

She turned back to face him.

MacKenzie: ::flatly:: Welcome to the bureaucracy of command. Isn’t it great?

Dakora: Response

MacKenzie: I don’t suppose there’s any way we can drag our feet here? Have something unexpectedly come up?

It was wishful thinking, but unlikely. The maintenance reports would be filed with Starfleet as soon as they were complete, and as soon as Command was notified they were finished on time, the Artemis would be required to report as ordered.

Dakora: Response

Tag, and TBC!
