Lt Alex Storm - In the Eye of the Storm

Recounting a personal defeat is a universally unpleasant experience.  But recounting the defeat of a colleague, a friend, is even worse as it places the outcome of the conversation squarely in the lap of the person narrating the inadequacy - real or perceived.

Storm:  When we debriefed, Lieutenant Bancroft said he would not shoot a friendly even on stun in a drill.  I’m trying to find a way to help him see the importance of acting the same way in training as he would act in the field.

MacKenzie: He would not?

Storm: That is what I heard.  

oO Please don’t let me have ended Roy’s career. Oo

MacKenzie: You believe he's a liability?

Alex’s stomach churned as her brain searched for the best answer she could give.  

Storm: I believe … he doesn’t have to be.

Mackenzie shrugged, and Alex felt heat emanate from her chest and her jaw fight to tighten - an action she firmly disallowed herself.
 
MacKenzie: So what are you going to do about it?

Alex didn’t realize that by doing one phaser qualification that she was now solely responsible for the failing grade she gave her pupil.  Somewhere deep inside, she already knew her fate and his were intertwined - though before now, she wasn’t sure how.  And she refused to hang Roy out to dry.

Storm: I’m going to find a way to help him wrap his mind around what he doesn’t yet understand, and given some time, I will help him get ready to successfully go into the field.

MacKenzie:  Response  

Storm:  Obviously, whether or not you send him out is up to you.  My job - as I understand it - is to get him ready for whenever you choose to send him.

MacKenzie: Response

Storm:  Understood.

Alex side-stepped and slipped her feet into her pink three-inch heels.  She raised her eyes to MacKenzie's and waited to see if the Captain had a closing salvo.

MacKenzie: Response
