((CMO’s Office - Primary Sickbay, Deck 7, USS Artemis-A))
Gila thought herself to have a rather decent memory for things - particularly the life-threatening and reality-bending memories - but when you’d been repeatedly exposed to the truly insane events of the last year, one could be forgiven for having lapses in memory. Much like the one Gila just had, when she asked whether Commander Adea grew up in the Borderlands, given his mother’s close proximity.
Adea: No, I grew up on Betazed - remember, we visited my childhood home last year?
Sadar: Oh, right, I completely forgot... ::pales:: The fact that I can forget that I travelled through time, and honestly say it isn’t the craziest thing to have happened in the past year.
The Commander’s smile wasn’t one of joy or mirth - rather, it was one of sympathy. He’d served in Starfleet longer than she had, and probably seen far more. That notion in itself was disturbing to say the least. How much lunacy did she have to witness before that would become her reaction too?
Adea: Well, it being a new year, as much as that means anything in the darkness of space, I suppose it does warrant a looking back - what’s your most memorable moment, do you think?
Sadar: ... I-I must admit, I hadn’t anticipated crashing the saucer of a Galaxy Class onto Luna in my second year in-service. ::considers:: Wh-What about you, Sir? And please don't say 'just another year'.
Commander Adea smiled again, but this time there was something in his eyes that made Gila simultaneously feel a bit cheered up and even more anxious. It was a strange ambiguity and she was certain she didn’t like it, at all.
Adea: You took the words right out of my mouth, Gila. Another year has gone, and to be frank, good riddance to it - we’ve had to deal with the Borg, with CloQ and the mess down on that last planet. I wouldn’t wish it on my worst enemy.
Sadar: ::mumbles discontentedly:: Why did I ever think serving in this Fleet was a good idea in the first place...
Adea: But what you also have to remember is the good that we’ve done - the aid we’ve administered as doctors, the civilisations we’ve nudged in the right direction, and, to be corny, the friendships we’ve made along the way.
Commander Adea’s uncharacteristic moment of self awareness shocked Gila into a very improper snort, and barely had the sound escaped the confines of her olfactory passage before her lavender hue paled to a dusty ash and she quickly shuffled around in her seat.
Sadar: ::hasty clearing of throat:: I-I-If you say so, Sir. Yes, of course, I mean, uh- ::twists anxiety band in rapid succession:: R-Regardless of the lack of consistent personal safety and the general unpredictability of service aboard a Starship, I, of course, intend to- I mean-
Adea: Response
Gila took a deep breath, the very Human phrase of ‘one step forwards, two backwards’ coming to mind, as she attempted to force herself to calm down again. She ought to know Commander Adea well enough at this point to realize that he didn’t take great offense to most things - wasn’t that very realization what had actually prompted her to recognize the Shint version of Adea from this one? - but some habits and customs weren’t so easily forgotten.
At least, not consistently, or character development would be an all too easy ordeal, wouldn’t it?
Sadar: O-Of course, Sir. ::clears throat:: Th-Thank you for the tea.
Adea: Response
She rose from her seat to leave the Commander’s office behind, before an unwelcome notion wormed itself into her mind. Kolya had mentioned wanting to make their Aailudet a bit more - what was the word he used? - ‘intergalactic’ since they were staying on a Starship. In researching how to do that, Gila had arrived at a frankly concerning tradition amongst certain Starfleet species.
A ‘housewarming’.
In the Federation Standard definition of a ‘housewarming’, it was a celebratory party where you invited family members, friends and acquaintances to celebrate the possession of a new domicile. Multiple words in that definition terrified Gila - namely ‘party, ‘invite’, ‘friends and acquaintances’ and ‘celebrate’. The entire concept itself, basically.
Sadar: I, uhh... oO I’m going to regret this. Oo K-Kolya and I are going to, uhh... ::organizes her thoughts before looking back:: W-We’re going to be hosting an Aailudet in our quarters once Kolya’s finishes decorating. It’s, uhh, similar to a ‘housewarming’... I think? I-If you’d like, you’re welcome to...
That was the point at which Gila’s forced calm abandoned her, and she stood in the entrance to Commander Adea’s office, shuffling uncomfortably on her feet.
Adea: Response
And with that, Gila nodded a hasty farewell before leaving the room.
oO I am definitely going to regret that. Oo
