to USS Artemis-A – StarBase 118 Star Trek PBEM RPG
(( Path Out of Town – Holodeck 1, Deck 2, USS Artemis-A ))
A horde of roving bandits was no good news, and neither was the concept of a horde of roving ghost bandits that spread out from their mine at night. As the squad of officers-turned-bounty hunters followed the river and finally reached the Oak Island River Delta, Tamio could thankfully ascertain that these bandits were no more ghosts than they themself was. But that was where the good news ended.
K'Wara: Damn. Lookouts. If they see us, they'll alert the entire mine. And I don't think there's a chance of us sneaking the horses over there without getting spotted.
Jovenan: Let’s hide the horses somewhere and figure out how to get closer without being noticed.
Silveira: Good idea.
Tamio followed after the others towards a wooded area on the other side of the road, trying to keep out of sight from the island as they did so. Once they'd safely moved the horses behind an outcropping, Tamio dismounted Annie and loosely tied her to one of the trees, and saw the others do the same.
Jovenan: Wait. What’s that over there?
oO Please don't let it be zombies Oo
It, as a matter of fact, was not. Instead, it was a stack of crates, which had been placed rather oddly in the middle of this little flat area behind the outcropping.
Silveira: Let’s check it quickly.
Munro: Be careful! It might be dynamite.
That would be some coincidence. Jovenan hesitated for barely a second before opening one of the crates, and promptly got assaulted by a puff of dusty air.
Jovenan: This must have been the old miners’ campsite. Look at these! ::pulls out a moth-eaten shirt and a rusty pickaxe::
K'Wara: ::grimace:: Moth Chic is so not in anymore.
Silveira: If…
Tamio looked over as Vitor seemed to have gotten a brilliant idea (at least by his standards). His glee at his girlfriend's presentation, however, didn't inspire confidence in the Cygnian officer.
Silveira: I think we got lucky…
K’Wara: A moth-balled shirt and a rusty pickaxe is lucky?
Thankfully, Vitor redeemed himself by soon making it apparent that it wasn't the horrid excuse for practical fashion that had inspired him, but rather a small and stout wooden contraption. Or, was it wood? At a closer inspection, Tamio actually wasn't certain what it was supposed to be.
Silveira: This… This is it…
Their curiosity was piqued, and they approached Vitor and the strange contraption he was manipulating, and then Tamio's face mirrored Vitor's quite closely.
Silveira: OK so I am betting this well or shaft connects with the mine. We can use it to scare them.
Munro: This is probably how they've been able to get across the river. We really should check out the island some more. Let's see if it's passable by horse. I'm going to bet a fair amount of these criminals can't swim. Come on Tambourine, you're with me.
She had to have done that one on purpose, right?
K’Wara: ::mumbles:: If you weren't the XO- ::sighs:: Coming.
Jovenan: Response
Tamio followed Ava up the mound, crawling on all fours to ensure that the massive dust yellow plume wouldn't give them away immediately, and once they reached the top, they laid down on their stomach and whipped out their spyglass again.
Silveira: Something that can sound from another world, anything metallic like a saw… ::he gestured with his hands as he looked around:: The most scary thing is our imagination, and if we make enough noise, from inside the mine….
Oak Island itself was barely more than a spot of land in the center of the river, with a couple of small oak trees to give it its name. It seemed a strange place to build a mine, but Tamio knew that there was this strange malady called 'Gold Fever' during this period of human history, and for some reason it always involved a sieve and running water. Perhaps, in that context, it was actually the ideal placement?
Silveira: Ava… You don’t happen to have some British blood on your veins, do you? I somehow feel you could scream like that mythological creature… A Banshee? Have you heard of it?
The question triggered some amusement in her.
Munro: My Dad is Scottish. Does that count?
K’Wara: ::without looking away from their spyglass:: Definitely explains a lot.
Silveira/Jovenan: Response
Satisfied that they wouldn't be getting any more information than was readily apparent, they followed Ava as she carefully reverse-crawled back to Vitor and Jovenan's position.
Munro: We can't swim across that river. My guess is they use this shaft to travel through when the river swells up like it has.
K’Wara: Conversely, if we can't swim across, those hillbilly's stand no chance of doing it either. Blocking this well should be all we need to keep them in one place.
Silveira/Jovenan: Response
Unfortunately, they were running out of time. Before they had made a good decision, they heard voices carry inside the runnel. Tamio's eyes widened in alarm as they looked between the others.
Munro: Dammit!
Tamio watched as Ava got low to the ground and started to wail through one of the gaps in the wood, her voice making a frankly abominable sound. Those Scottish genes definitely came in handy. She made a gesture that very much read like an order to do the same, before she leapt to her feet and started to do a jig, slamming her boots onto the wood and the ground as she hollered.
It was awe-inspiring.
K'Wara: I am so tempted to ask the Holodeck to record this. ::bends down:: Awooooooooooh~! ::stomps erratically:: Iyaaaaaaaah~!
Silveira/Jovenan: Response
Tamio gestured maniacally for one of the others to find something heavy to block the opening with, as they picked up a rusted nail from a long-dead fireplace and started scratching on the wood. It wasn't quite like jagged dead nails on wood, but it would do.
Silveira/Jovenan/Munro: Response
They were only too willing to accomodate that request as they abandoned Banshee-duty and instead posted up on the mount once more.
K'Wara: ::looks through the spyglass:: Oh, we've definitely got them riled up in there. ::smirks:: There's about two dozen of those guys on the island right now. Some of them in their nighties, the poor sods.
Silveira/Jovenan/Munro: Response
With the mine entrance barred, Tamio rolled around on their back and looked back down to their fellow officers.
K'Wara: ::claps their hands together:: Guess all that's left is to alert the Lieutenant that we've got an early Birthday Present all wrapped up and waiting? ::slightly wider smile:: Maybe he'll buy us a drink to celebrate?
