(( Bridge - Deck 1, USS Artemis ))
The captain didn't often take her duty shifts on the bridge. Generally she preferred to work in the solitude offered by her ready room, emerging only when there was an emergency or other business to take care of, but in light of their recent stint stranded on Callis 1, there was a great sense of relief, comfort, and familiarity that the Artemis bridge offered. There wasn't any pressing need for her to be on the bridge - they were in shore leave in orbit of a peaceful Federation planet and it was a quiet day, after all - but since their return from Callis, Addison made it a point not to take her position on this bridge for granted.
And so, she sat in the center chair in the center of the Artemis bridge casually flicking through the endless stream of PADDwork that accumulated over their week+ off the grid that now demanded her attention. In her periphery, she could see the figure of one of the newest Artemis crewmembers awkwardly bouncing from one foot to the other. It wasn't long before Breys got up from her station and started to approach, and MacKenzie desperately hoped she wasn't going to ask her for permission to use the restroom.
Breys: ::at first quietly:: uh… ::more confidently:: Fleet Captain Addison Mackenzie, sir!
Addison lifted her head out of her PADD, brow slightly furrowed with a perplexed expression on her face, and proceeded to look around the bridge as if searching for the officer in question until finally her gaze fell back on Breys.
MacKenzie: Oh, I suppose that's me.
Breys stepped forward. Addison was sure this was the moment when Breys would confess that she had to go to the bathroom.
Breys: I-I Just wanted to introduce myself professionally, and say I’m excited to be on board! I was thrilled when I was assigned to the Artemis, and I’m happy I made it off the planet to actually see her.
MacKenzie blinked several times, her face not revealing any other facet of expression, until finally she spoke.
MacKenzie: I believe we've met already. But, since you're here, and this is apparently a thing we're going to do, why don't you give me the rundown?
Breys: I’m your new science officer, Ensign D’tin Breys. I’m a botanist with a focus in herbology. I went to school for herbalism on Bajor before joining Starfleet. I hope I can be of help to the crew!
The captain offered a half-smile that she was sure wasn't even remotely reassuring.
MacKenzie: Well, that's certainly the goal, isn't it? ::lifting her arms with her palms up:: So, what got you interested in herbology?
Breys: Response
MacKenzie: Interesting. Any particular reason you chose to pursue a scientific path with the subject instead of a medicinal one?
Breys: Response
MacKenzie nodded slowly.
MacKenzie: And why a career in Starfleet?
The questions were routine as far as a MacKenzie-based onboarding was concerned. Though the CO could easily find the answers in a service record, the way an officer chose to conduct themselves during their opening interrogation exercise reporting to the captain told her a lot about those who'd been assigned to serve on the Artemis and how they dealt with stress.
Breys: Response
