((Arboretum - Deep Space 9))
At that moment, the bushes ahead of them rustled violently for a moment, before Toto appeared a foot in the air. He flew through the leafy bush, bursting through the foliage with gay abandon. When he came skittering to a halt at Genkos’ feet, the doctor knelt down to stroke his head and recoiled when his hand went into something sticky.
Adea: What have you got all over you boy? Is that sap?
With hesitance, Gnai reached out to touch the dog as well with its mechanical hand.
Gnai: ~ Is Toto okay? ~
Genkos touched Toto’s fur again, gingerly and saw that the sticky substance was an alarming reddish colour and tacky to the touch. He was relieved to see that Toto seemed happy in himself, and so touched the tip of his tongue to the texture and was relieved to taste that it wasn’t blood.
Adea: ~ He is, I don’t know what it is - not blood though. ~
Genkos looked around, trying to see what the source of the substance could be, whilst Gnai looked at the finger of its suit.
Gnai: Wait… Is this-
A sharp yell rang out across the trail, and an elderly Bajoran man came hobbling up, practically steaming with rage. His vestments were a vibrant orange and an understated brown, with a close fitting hood that exposed just his ears and face. But the brown trim of his robes were are symphony of pawprints - and Genkos felt his heart sink as he realised what had happened.
In his right hand, the Vedek held a half-finished canvas, depicting a stately Bajoran Moba tree… marred with a large streak of the same brown that had come off of Toto’s coat. And more than one pawprint. This painting was thrust in Genkos’ face, and shook with a purpose.
Ornery Vedek: You! Keep better control of your beast! ::shaking the painting harder:: It’s gone and ruined this canvas, and jumped all over me. Look! ::grasping the side of his robes with his other hand to shake them and draw attention to the mess Toto had made with his paints::
Genkos raised his free hand (the other holding his cane) in a show of mea culpa, and tried to deescalate the situation.
Adea: My sincerest apologies, sir. I -
Gnai motioned Toto to slip behind it, which the dog did with pleasure, and Genkos was interrupted by the Vedek.
Ornery Vedek: Keep your dog under control, or don’t bring it here. ::jabbing a finger at Genkos’ chest:: If I see it running around again, I shall call the constabulary. And you’ll be thrown out.
He finished his threat with a huff. Starfleet officers, trampling around in his arboretum, with their dogs and little concern for the peace and tranquillity of an old Vedek! The nerve of some people… Genkos turned back to Gnai and Toto and kneeled down.
Adea: Come on boy, let’s get you cleaned up. ::he looked over at Gnai:: ~ I am so sorry, Gnai, to cut short our walk. I was so enjoying it. ~
Gnai: ~ Response ~
Genkos called Toto to heel and started to walk towards the entrance of the arboretum.
Adea: Come on you - a bath will be punishment enough for you.
