((Deck 3, DS33))
Talia was mid-scan when she finally got the courage to ask the question that really had been bothering her. There was no reason they were assigned cabin decorating duty. Any and all environmental controls would have been pre-programmed, and from the brief exposure she'd had with the people running this place, any culturally important changes would have been seen to personally. It was almost as if they were being sent off to do something to keep them busy.
Ohnari: I mean, you are the chief engineer of a Starship. And this is a fully functional, and staffed station. But...they ask us here to...check out the guest quarters for turn-down service...?
They needed to go through all the security protocol, equipped with an emergency phaser to...fluff pillows?
Dewitt: I agree with you. And I don't know what happened. My best guess is that the Captain wants us to be around in case things go south. For all I know, I would have said you can trust anybody carrying this uniform... But after our last mission I know that was a ... naive thought. ::pause:: And Commander Stergis did not seem incredibly excited to have us around... so this is where we ended up for the moment.
She suppressed a shudder. Normally, she would agree, trusting those in a Starfleet uniform...except last time those in uniform actively tried to kill them.
Ohnari: You don't think we're being punished via latrine duty for destroying the Lebris...do you? ::rubbing the back of her neck sheepishly:: Well that came out remarkably more paranoid than I had intended...forget I said that last part, uh, would you sir?
He stood up and smiled.
Dewitt: No worries. I also think our potential is not put to good use here. ::pause:: We still have about 4 hours until the delegates arrive. We have one other quarter to check. ::another pause:: I guess we will accomplish our tasks in time, even if we check if this replicator is programmed with Ferengi dishes first.
Ohnari: I am sure it has all the insectoid options even the choosiest Ferengi could hope for...
Dewitt: Two Slug-o-cola, with ice. ::looking to Talia:: Way too slimy without... Trust me.
She managed to avoid snorting. Just barely.
Ohnari: Is this part of the quality checking?
Dewitt: Well, we have to check for the proper technical specifications of every beverage provided so the delegates feel comfortable. You'll choose the Sheliak dish... ::making a face:: if they eat and drink... do they eat and drink?
Sitting down, she accepted the semi-slimy beverage. For a moment, she was entirely stumped. She wasn't exactly sure how the Sheliak ingested food, let alone what that food would be.
Ohnari: I...am entirely unsure. In all my admittedly limited research, their dietary preferences didn't come up in my search.
Although it probably should have. Who knew? Maybe the secretions broke down surface level bacteria or they had their own version of photosynthesis...they weren't exactly prone to sharing their time, let alone details of their complex anatomy.
Pulled out of her musings, Talia clinked glasses with the Engineering chief and took a tentative sip. As soon as the liquid crossed her lips, she struggled to swallow through the intense urge to start coughing.
Dewitt: For all I know the Federation now owes some Ferengi a little Latinum since we ordered this.
Ohnari: ::coughing:: By the Gods...you could use that for engine lubrication in a pinch...
Still trying to get the taste out of her mouth, she instinctively took another sip. This of course exacerbated the existing problem and she hoped her stomach would forgive her.
Dewitt: Did you hear that?
In the midst of her own self induced coughing fit, she shook her head towards him.
Ohnari: ::strangled:: No, hear what?
Talia watched the Lieutenant examine the door. It wasn't lost on her that it wasn't responding....
Dewitt: Doctor?
Following his glance, Talia noticed the thick acrid smelling gas as it began pouring out of the vents along the floor. Standing quickly, she retreated towards the door.
Ohnari: Computer: Open the door, Access emergency medical level override. Physician Authorization code Alpha Zeta Three: Ohnari, Talia K.
Expecting to hear the opening of the door, the flat toned error beep answered in response.
Computer =/\= Unable to comply, credentials invalid. Ohnari, Talia K is not aboard this Starbase. =/\=
Ohnari: The hell I'm not! I am right here. ::her wide eyes filled with panic as she glanced over:: So this is a problem.
Dewitt: Response?
The gas was rising, although seeming to be localized to the vents in the primary living space. In a panic, she grasped the front of Connor's shirt and yanked as she herself lowered to the ground and began backing towards the enclosed bathroom area.
Ohnari: Forgive me sir, I realize you are engaged. ::brittle laugh:: But we've got to get away from that gas. It's rising, so we stay low.
Dewitt: Response?
In an awkward shuffle, Talia was trying to keep calm while in the midst of a swift, backwards crawl towards what she hoped would be a safe, enclosable space. The ventilation system that fed into there had to go somewhere...she hoped.
The gas cloud was in fact rising, and the room was slowly beginning to fill with whatever was being pumped in. Was someone attempting to attack the Ferengi ambassadors...? Or was this little horror show just for them? Once both officers were in the thankfully gas free bathing chamber, Talia was thankful at least the bathroom door complied.
Ohnari: Well that's one in the positive column...::tricorder in hand, she began scanning the area:: So far the air is untainted, but I am picking up faint elements of an anesthetic gas. oO At least it's non-lethal...Oo What do we do..?
Shayne: =/\= Shayne to Dewitt. Come in, Lieutenant! =/\=
Another in the plus column, the Captain was calling. He would get them out of this mess.
Dewitt: =/\= Response =/\=
Shayne: =/\= Glad to hear you, chief- I can’t get ahold of the security contingent. Do you have an idea of what’s wrong? =/\=
Ohnari: Wait....security isn't responding? =/\= Captain, this is Ohnari, the door to the Ferengi quarters locked, and it refused my credentials for an emergency level medical override. =/\=
Dewitt: Response?
Shayne: =/\= What do you mean, you’re locked in? =/\=
Dewitt: =/\= Response =/\=
Ohnari: =/\= Well...currently in the bathroom, the leak seems to be localized to the main living area. =/\=
Dewitt/Shayne: =/\= Response?
