to USS Arrow – StarBase 118 Star Trek PBEM RPG
((Deck 4, Section 7 - USS Arrow))
Karrod watched anxiously as the hologrid shimmered into existence, the images and textures resolving with perfect clarity a few moments later. He was so fixated on his hunt for technical failures that it took him a long moment to appreciate the spectacular simulated beauty that now surrounded him. He let out a low whistle as the full environment settled into place.
((Simulation of Siamass Living Murals, Hologrid 1, USS Arrow))
Somewhere deep inside Niac his past host, Armo, was elated. A exo-botanist by training, she began rattling off the scientific names and families of the various flowering flora. Karrod felt like he was going to sneeze until his beard fell off. The gardens were a stunningly vivid collection of hundreds of plant species all meticulously tended and intertwined, created a mosaic of living color that was even more breathtaking than the simulated pollen count.
Perim: Ever been here?
Karrod shook his head as he looked around, still trying to tease out any hologrid issues but growing content that their work had been a success. He'd heard of these gardens many times but had never visited them himself. Within him, Armo chided him harshly...she'd spent many hours here before going off world. Her memories of the place were among her most precious.
Niac: Bit of a complicated answer....I've never been there myself, but one of my past hosts liked spending her off hours here. ::Karrod sneezed violently:: Sorry, I know the pollen isn't real but apparently my nose doesn't. This place special to you?
Karrod took a step forward and joined the Cadet as she pointed towards a vast mural on the far garden wall. It was massive, complex and almost obscenely beautiful. Armo rejoiced and began a detailed explanation of the entire piece which Karrod squelched with a thumb to the abdomen.
Perim: Siamass Kahl painted the first part on that wall. A leftover from the Trillian wars. It was once a wall of a fortress manned by unjoined Trill. ::she paused:: Siamass was unjoined herself... But although she never got the chance to become joined, she embraced her life and invited everyone to contribute to her mural. Today it's not only a mural, but a collection of art contributed by artists from all over the galaxy.
Niac: It's spectacular...and I can appreciate someone without a symbiote trying to make the most of their lives. I never expected to end up Joined myself...always thought people chasing it their whole lives were missing out on their own existence in favor of carrying around a slug. ::Karrod chucked at his own somewhat grouchy memories on the subject.:: After the last year, I may be mellowing a bit. So...::Karrod opened his arms and encompassed the whole garden::...you had the whole galaxy to choose from and you picked a spot on the homeworld? Why here?
Perim: It's a special place. It grasps what being a Trill is all about in one garden. It shows our cultural identity. And it shows what's keeping us busy and reminds us of what friction might arise. And it reminds us that creating a better society together can overcome this friction. ::she paused again:: Maybe it is just a young Trill's dream... But it is what I would like to envision our society to be like. ::pause:: Even if we get rejected by the commission.
Karrod smiled and suddenly felt very much older. His memories comingled with Niac and he got vivid images of each of their efforts to obtain a symbiote and become one of the Joined. He took a seat on a nearby bench that gave him a clear view of the mural.
Niac: So you want a slug of your own, eh?
Perim: Response
Karrod chuckled and patted his abdomen fondly.
Niac: No, I didn't go through the normal selection process. I was visiting the home world for the first time in years and the Niac symbiote was in bad shape. After badgering me for about a week and learning about the symbiotes history, I begrudgingly accepted. It's been...well...not quite what I expected. Little thing tends to get me in trouble at least as often as it gets me out of it.
Perim: Response
Karrod leaned back and thought about it.
Niac: If I had it to do over again? Oh, I think I'd still let them sublet. They don't get on my nerves all that often anymore. We've managed to develop a mostly successful partnership.
Perim: Response
