((Security Chief's desk, Security Suite, Deck 3, USS Arrow))

Dewitt: =/\= Go ahead! =/\=

MacKenna: =/\= MacKenna here. =/\=

Collins: =/\= Yeah, Chief? =/\=

Serinus: =/\= Ensign, I'm sending over coordinates, I need you to focus the probe on the immediate area and get all of the readings you can. Commanders, I need you to give me your best interpretations of the findings that follow.=/\=

Dewitt: =/\= Acknowledged. We've also probably discovered a way to

approach the planet undetected, as well as having a couple of shots
through the station's shields. ::pausing for a second, looking at
Quentin:: I suppose Commander Collins will brief you on the specifics.

I'll get to work on the probe's scans. =/\=

That was exciting. Any advantage that they could get, they needed to press it.

MacKenna: =/\= Will send my findings as soon as I have them. =/\=

Collins: =/\= Should hit the system in a coupla' minutes. =/\=

Serinus: =/\= Thank you all, Serinus out. =/\=

Niac:  Probe will be back on station in two minutes, which gives us a chance to talk specifics.  What do you see the away team composition looking like?

Tarisai: A team of three at least. Three is a good, strong number for a party. And a pilot if possible.

They've had larger away teams for less risky missions, on the other hand, too big a group could inevitably get slowed down.

Serinus: We'll need a trained medic, if not for us, then the prisoners. And probably a Science Officer. This could be a very grueling mission, mental and physical toughness should be taken into account when picking the team.

The bearded Trill with the job that was nearly as big as his face warmer, scowled a bit. He thought that something had been wrong with his proposal, what he didn't know yet, was that he was describing not a couple of people, but only a singular person. The last person on the ship who should be going on this jaunt despite any other qualifications.

Niac:  On that subject, Mr. Serinus, you should know the Captain has chosen to lead the landing party himself.  As I will be remaining on the ship I'm making you personally responsible for his safety, Lieutenant Commander.  That goes for you as well, Ensign.  Whatever happens down there, get the Captain back on this ship.  Do we understand one another?

The foolishness, the arrogance, the nerve. Randal. . . .Captain Shayne surely knew better by now.  Before Artinus could properly stew, his combage beeped. So he quickly answered the new XO, and then moved on.

MacKenna: =/\= MacKenna to Serinus. =/\=

Serinus: Yes, sir.

Serinus: =/\= Go ahead, Commander. =/\=

MacKenna: =/\= It's clearly a mine. Apparently the Sheliak 'employ' others in such areas to do the work they cannot.=/\=

Employ as in utilize, not so much employ as in pay. He wasn't surprised really, though a space faring species should have some kind of tech to reduce manual labor already.

Serinus: =/\=  I see.=/\=

MacKenna: =/\= There's not much from my intel sources aside from the same central destabilization chatter, but if that says anything, it says that they may be desperate for resources. And desperation can lead to some dangerous places. =/\=

A scramble for resources was always inevitable during the decline of empires.

Serinus =/\= Thank you, ma'am. =/\=

Tarisai: Yes, sir.

Artinus looked over the holodisplay, putting particular focus on the comms array.

Niac:  Take a look...about three hundred meters across at the widest point....appear to be airlocks at regular intervals around the outside and one large one in the center...could be how they move whatever they're pulling out of the rocks.  We're picking up a large cavern...and a tunnel system cut several hundred meters below that.

Serinus: We can feed that map into the holodeck. We need to learn the chokepoints and ambush opportunities as quickly as possible.

Tarisai: Is there anything else?

Karrod's eyes narrowed in concern as the probe passed along more data.

Niac:  That's not all we found...looks like there are at least two large defensive batteries on the surface.  If either one of those gets a clear shot at our shuttle our people won't have a chance.

Serinus: Perhaps a night op? If we have the time.

Tarisai: That defensive battery doesn't look very well maintained, does it? Look here.

Zooming in, the Ensign continued as her boss looked at the battery in question.

Tarisai: I think I saw something similar to this in one of our modules on common weapons used by other species. It's Orion in make, I think, but outdated by about sixty years. The sensors it uses are not very good by today's standards - and this one seems

She was 100% correct, and Artinus was continuing to be impressed by his protege. She was making herself, and their department look stellar in front of the XO. Better yet, she was contributing to the mission objectives in very real ways.

Serinus: A firestar 23 Mark 8. Good eye again, Ensign. This has got to be the weak spot that Engineering reported.

Niac: Responses

Tarisai: I suppose that depends on how they're moving their quarry inside. Perhaps we could slip in with the next load.

Serinus: Tactically, it makes sense. Brilliant sense. Strategically, unless we can get their delivery schedule, we might not be able to wait.

The Security Chief looked to their XO, for his input.

Niac: Response

Tarisai: Response

Serinus: We do have a whole Marine team dedicated to search and rescue ops, perhaps Chief Jones can be of some assistance.

Artinus wondered why it hadn't occurred to himself earlier, let alone everyone else combined. Someone should have pegged him as an obvious choice for this mission straight away.

Niac/Tarisai: Reponses

Artinus nodded grimly, and tapped his combadge.

=/\= Serinus to Chief Jones. =/\=

V. Jones =/\= Response =/\=

He'd barely talked to the man, a good man indeed, since their shared trauma of seeing two of Jones' marines eaten by some gods awful devolved Gorn. But he genuinely liked him regardless.

Serinus: =/\= Please report to my desk asap.=/\=

 V. Jones =/\= Response =/\=

Niac/Tarisai: Reponses
